It hasn’t been long since Hulkling and Wiccan tied the knot at the end of Marvel’s Empyre event, but they are already facing an adversary whose actions are threatening to reshape the entire Marvel Universe. Dormammu may not be new to the Marvel Universe, but this former Doctor Strange villain and Lord of the Dark Dimension, has taken on a new form and is unleashing his army on space… starting with the Kree/Skrull Empire in The Last Annihilation: Wiccan & Hulkling #1.
Dormammu has a long and complicated history in the Marvel Universe. He’s an entity almost as old as time itself and holds strong, apocalyptic levels of power that go beyond that of even Earth’s mightiest heroes. However, until recently he’d been confined to the Dark Dimension and hadn’t been causing as much havoc. That was until the X-Men used their powers to play god and threw off the balance of the universe. Now he’s back, with an army of mindless ones, and ready to conquer the whole of space itself. Unfortunately for newlyweds Hulkling and Wiccan, he’s starting his assault on their front.
What will this invasion mean for the young couple (leaders of the Kree/Skrull Empire), their people, and the Marvel universe as a whole? Other than the fact that the two Hulking and Wiccan will have to split up to defend the worlds they have sworn to protect, Marvel is leaving a lot up in the air. Whether they will be able to fight off Dormammu’s forces, or, as Marvel puts it, become “the next casualties in this senseless war” is yet to be determined. But this one-shot promises to be about more than just their battle against one of the greatest magical threats to ever exist. Written by Anthony Oliveira with art by Jan Bazaldua and colors by Rachelle Rosenberg, The Last Annihilation: Wiccan & Hulkling #1 will also have “quieter moments, like one of Billy and Teddy’s first-ever interactions back in their high school days.”
This won’t be the first or the last fans hear of the upcoming Last Annihilation event. This saga is taking place across multiple Marvel titles, with Wiccan & Hulkling being only a snapshot in the whole scheme of events. It started with Guardians of the Galaxy #16 at the beginning of July and will end with Guardians of the Galaxy #18 at the end of September. Other issues involved in the telling of this story are S.W.O.R.D. #7, Guardians of the Galaxy #17, Cable: Reloaded #1, and The Last Annihilation: Wakanda #1.
The Last Annihilation is being labeled by Marvel as the “war to end all wars:” a battle that unfortunately not everyone will return home from. This means that even Hulkling and Wiccan’s lives may be at stake. Considering the loss their family has already gone through (whether the X-Men have informed them or not) with the passing of the Scarlet Witch, it would be difficult to see them endure any more heartbreak so soon. But regardless of the outcome for their relationship or their empire, they can’t avoid the cosmic storm that’s coming. Come September 1st Wiccan and Hulkling are going to have to face Dormammu’s army head-on, and hopefully for their sake, they won’t have to face it alone.
