The next game in the Battlefield series is being held off until after the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X, because EA wants healthy player numbers.

EA has finally clarified that the reason the Battlefield series will be waiting until 2021 for its next iteration will be to take advantage of next generation platforms. Recent statements made by EA via GameSpot clarify that the company will be, “targeting new innovation that will be enabled by next-gen platforms.”
With next generation platforms Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 confirmed to release in time for Holiday 2020, many have pressed for further details regarding the decision not to launch simultaneously with the new consoles. EA’s spokesperson handled this request in the most EA way possible, by clarifying that, “Bringing out Battlefield [in 2020], where the new console base is fairly small, doesn’t really give justice to the potential of the title, and so that’s part of our driver in moving the title into fiscal 22.”
This is not dissimilar to previous release patterns from EA DICE, as seen when Battlefield 4 was released to coincide with the capabilities arriving with the Xbox One and PS4. This approach however, raises concerns of what metrics will be used to track the success of the game, their significance upon not only the launch of the next Battlefield game, but the continuation of support through the end of planned content. As evident by the Star Wars: Battlefront II model, games with even the rockiest of starts can turn into shining examples of success in a series franchise, but Battlefield V was not so lucky.
Recent datamines have been seeking ways to clarify why the plug was pulled, in hopes to learn what might lie ahead as speculation builds for the next Battlefield. The video below navigates through the continuous decline in the player base from the many millions, down to the tens of thousands or less before content support for the game was officially ended. Most worthwhile is the analysis of the jumps and declines in players corresponding to key updates; it seems highly likely that both TTK changes killed the game. Twice.
With all hands on deck after the Star Wars: Battlefront II team and the Battlefield V teams close out those titles, expectations are high for the release of the next iteration in the series. Perhaps most responsible for high expectations are the team at EA DICE themselves, who previously committed to two years of support for Battlefield V, and in last week’s update have confirmed that promise will not be kept. Perhaps the player base will forgive this if the launch of the next Battlefield avoids the missteps of Battlefield V, and Star Wars: Battlefront II given the cumulative lessons learned.
Is the juice worth the squeeze? Fans hope so. Especially without divided attention, the team focused on the next Battlefield game have produced some of the most visually stunning, immersive, and team based combat games in recent years. Combined with the excitement surrounding next generation consoles, and expectations will remain high for the series to launch in a proper manner.
