Future BAFTA Game Awards will require diversity both from video game characters as well as the developers’ employees.

BAFTA is putting money where their mouth is. It’s not enough to simply say that Black Lives Matter–you have to mean it too. And what better way to do that than make it a requirement of getting an award?

BAFTA (that’s the British Academy of Film and Television Arts) will institute a pilot program for the 2021 game awards that will require diversity from its entrants, both in terms of the games produced and the companies that produce them. BAFTA will make the BFI Diversity Standards a requirement for entry into the British Academy Game Awards, the highest honor in British gaming.

The pilot program will just affect one award for Best British Game in 2021. Other categories won’t be affected, but BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry made it clear that the plan is to roll out the BFI Diversity standards in future editions of the BAFTA Game Awards.

BFI Diversity Standards require diversity in four major categories, including in-game representation, themes and narratives; creative leadership and development team; industry access & opportunities; and player Base Development.

To take the first major category as an example, in order to be compliant with in-game representation, the lad character must be “from an under-represented group(s).” For non-narrative games with a larger cast of characters, those characters must be either 50/50 gender-balanced, have at least 20% belonging to an ethnic minority, be 10% LGBTQ+, or be 7% differently-abled.

Similar requirements are also made of the developers’ employees in order to meet the standards for industry access and creative leadership.

There’s a lot more, and you can read the full list of requirements on this PDF. BAFTA is accepting entries to the 2021 awards, and if all goes well, we’ll see the BFI Standards roll out for 2022.
