A mere two days after its release, Square Enix’s action role-playing game NieR Replicant ver. 122474487139…, has climbed to the top of Steam’s top-sellers list. Previously, the top spot was held by Hazelight’s co-op adventure title, It Takes Two, which has sold over one million copies since its release last month.

NieR Replicant is a remake of Square Enix’s 2010 title of the same name, which was released only in Japan. An alternate version of the game, simply titled NieR, was released in the west, which featured an older protagonist, as developers believed an older protagonist would be better received by Western audiences. The remake is a prequel to the incredibly successful 2017 title NieR: Automata, which was no doubt the driving force behind Square Enix’s decision to remake NieR Replicant. Before the global success of Automata, NieR was regarded as a cult classic and was not considered a commercial success outside of Japan.

Appearing at the top spot during the release of Steam Database’s weekly global best sellers list on April 25, NieR Replicant managed to oust the co-op puzzle platformer It Takes Two. NieR Replicant manages to appear twice on the top ten list, taking the number nine spot as well, due to its different purchasing options. The game has received a mostly positive reception from fans and critics since its release on April 23, although it has not been without issues, with mods already available to fix an array of problems prevalent in the PC port of the game.

Previously, the PC version of NieR: Automata was review-bombed on Steam due to its prevalent issues which have not been patched since release. The new NieR Replicant brings upgraded graphics and restores previously cut content, providing players with a new boss fight and extra story quests. This includes Episode Mermaid, which adds an entirely new area to the game. The combat system has also been reworked, no doubt to provide a modern gameplay experience more similar to NieR: Automata.

With the global success of both the new NieR Replicant and NieR: Automata, many gamers will no doubt be waiting with anticipation to see whether Square Enix will provide fans with a sequel, or even another game in the NieR universe. The game’s creator and writer, Yoko Taro is reported to be working on two separate games at the moment, although it remains unclear whether either of these projects are related to the NieR series. Even if the games turn out to be unrelated to the series, fans of Taro’s work would no doubt still be excited to see what he has in store.
