Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

On HBO series Succession, Shiv Roy is the only Roy daughter and arguably the best candidate to take over the family business, the media empire Waystar Royco.

She is smart, business-savvy, strong, and independent. While she might not be as familiar with the media world as her brother Kendall, she has been working in politics for some time and knows the art of the spin, of negotiation, and of how to represent a brand.

But she grew up with a silver spoon which makes her egotistical and arrogant sometimes, too. So, while there are plenty of times when fans felt bad for Shiv, there are many when fans hated her, too.

10 When Rhea Played Her: Felt Bad

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

In a strategic and cunning move, Rhea makes a play for CEO by offering Shiv her old job with the Pierce family, talking her up and saying she thinks she’d be great for it. Shiv actually considers it. Unbeknownst to Shiv, Rhea is just doing this so she can drive a wedge between Shiv and her father.

It worked. Her father found out and got very angry. It is this information, in part, that leads him to lose faith in his daughter and appoint Rhea as the new CEO to take over the company.

9 What She Told Tom On Their Wedding Night: Hated Her

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Shiv dropped a bomb on Tom on their wedding night, revealing that she didn’t think she could be in a monogamous relationship. She grew up in a world where if she wanted something, she took it. And she can’t imagine being tempted by anyone or anything and not being able to act. Roys always get what they want, essentially.

Now that they were legally married and Tom was part of the prestigious Roy family, he was conflicted. While he clearly didn’t want an open marriage, he had no choice but to relent. It was totally unfair to spring that on Tom, especially after getting married (and already having an affair).

8 When Her Ill Father Was Inappropriate: Felt Bad

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

After fighting unsuccessfully with Marcia to be able to see her father while he was in care upstairs at his home, recovering from his heart attack and surgery, Shiv simply blazed by her and ran up to the room.

However, while there, her father, in a non-lucid state, thought she was someone else and made a sexual advance on her that totally crept her out. She walked out of the room awkwardly only to be confronted by Marcia about her hiring a private investigator to look into her father’s third wife. It was a bad day all around.

7 When She Cheated On Tom: Hated Her

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

When going to Washington to discuss politics with her ex-boyfriend Nate, they flirted and ended up spending the night together in the same place, but in different rooms. Still, he continued to try and pursue her after which Shiv finally relented.

She felt no guilt about this and even confessed to Tom. She didn’t think it was a big deal at all to step out on her son-to-be husband with an ex who was also engaged himself. And when confronted later on after Nate’s fiancé found out, Shiv told him “too bad, so sad” in not so many words, seemingly unaffected by the fact that she broke up his relationship.

6 When Her Father Strung Her Along: Felt Bad

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

While at the family home in the Hamptons, Logan took each of his children into a private room separately to hear what they thought about him potentially selling the company. When it was Shiv’s turn, he flat out said he wanted her to run the company. She seemed excited and honored and he promised to flush out more details with her later.

But then he continued to leave her out of decisions, didn’t invite her to important meetings, discussed a plan that would take at least three years before she took over, and eventually appointed someone else behind her back. He didn’t have the faith in her to let her take over and was angry when she revealed to everyone that she seemingly would be.

5 Convinced a Sexual Assault Victim To Stay Quiet: Hated Her

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

It’s terrible that, as a woman, Shiv convinced a sexual assault victim to stay quiet just to save her family company. The woman, who used to work for the Waystar Royco cruise line, was assaulted while working there.

Shiv sympathized with her but promised to personally work on stopping all of the men involved in the scandals if the woman simply stayed quiet about the incident. While her promise of the woman’s silence aiding the greater good was admirable if she actually follows through, we still can’t stomach one woman trying to silence another.

4 Has To Find Tom a Job: Felt Bad

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

Not only does Shiv have to worry about her own career aspirations and position in the family business, but she is also constantly being badgered by Tom. First, he wanted her to help him get another job that would remove him from any of the cruise ship scandal stuff should it ever come to light.

Then, he wanted her to find him a better job altogether, which she finally did in convincing her father to move him to Chair of Global Broadcast News at ATN, a job which he seemingly knows nothing about. Meanwhile, she also has to deal with his clear jealousy that his wife could end up being his boss.

3 Her Jealousy of Rhea: Hated Her

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

OK, it was sort of warranted, but we can’t help but hate Shiv for her distrust of Rhea. Even if she should have been suspect of the woman, it was still somewhat petty. She did things like hint to Marcia that she believed her father was having an affair with Rhea.

She then blurted out in the middle of a big party that Rhea didn’t drink, quoting something Rhea had told her during a private meeting (which was a clear lie) and putting her in a weird position in front of hundreds of people. She also mentioned her distrust of Rhea to her brothers on multiple occasions, never really giving the woman a chance.

2 When Tom Said He Was Unhappy: Felt Bad

Succession 5 Times We Felt Bad For Shiv Roy (& 5 Times We Hated Her)

While she brought a lot of it on herself, we felt bad for Shiv when Tom finally disclosed to her that he was unhappy with his marriage. After she tried to arrange a threesome for them that Tom couldn’t go through with, and they traveled from one island to the next to try and reconnect, he sat down and revealed this information to her.

She looked taken aback but more so because she believed Tom would always put up with anything she threw his way in exchange for being able to secure his job and position with the family. But clearly he had reached a breaking point.

1 When She Had a Second Affair: Hated Her

Sure, she had already discussed the idea of an open marriage with Tom at that point, but it was clear Tom wasn’t comfortable with that arrangement. Still, she didn’t care. While out having a drink with Connor’s girlfriend Willa, Shiv was introduced to one of her attractive actor friends.

They ended up spending the night together. Then, they ran into each other once again at the opening night of Willa’s play where Tom realized that his wife had slept with him, too.
