Game of Thrones teased an epic showdown between Jon Snow and the Night King, but the fight never happened. So who would’ve won the battle?

The much-anticipated duel between Jon Snow and the Night King never materialized in Game of Thrones season 8, but who would’ve win if they did fight? First introduced in season 4, the Night King (originally played by Richard Brake, and then Vladimir Furdik) emerged as one of Game of Thrones’ biggest villains as the HBO show approached its endgame. As the leader of the White Walkers, he represented the coming of winter and the possible end of humanity itself.
Game of Thrones started teasing a climactic battle between Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and the Night King back in season 5’s episode “Hardhome”. After narrowly escaping the White Walkers in a desperate bid for survival after attempting to rescue the Wildlings, Jon sails away back to the Night’s Watch, while the Night King stares him down and raises the dead. The pair would come into close quarters again in season 7’s “Beyond the Wall”, where the stage was once again seemingly set for a showdown between the pair. Finally, in “The Long Night”, it seems like the pair are finally about to fight, only for the Night King to surround Jon with wights instead.
Later in that episode, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss decided to surprise viewers by having Maisie Williams’ Arya kill the Night King, despite (or rather, because of) everyone assuming it would be Jon’s task. Although it was a great moment for Arya’s character, many viewers did feel short-changed by not getting to see the former King in the North go up against the Night King in a, well, clash of kings – a fight that Jon Snow would likely have won. He was the central hero of the show, and having already died once it’d always seemed highly unlikely he would do so again, and so he’d have to either emerge victorious from their fight, or have it ended in such a way that he stayed alive, such as an intervention from someone else. It’s not impossible the Night King might’ve bested him but been stopped from killing him, but it does seem somewhat implausible.
Outside of his narrative purpose and coating of plot armor, the odds still favor Jon Snow. By the time of Game of Thrones season 8, he was regarded as the greatest warrior in Westeros; while there’s room for debate on exactly who was the best, he was undoubtedly among the most skilled with a sword – a weapon that just so happened to be Valyrian steel, and so perfectly designed for killing the Night King with one stab. Jon faced two different White Walkers in Game of Thrones – once in season 5, and again in season 7 – and defeated them both, the second in particular with a great level of ease. With experience of fighting and killing them, then it’s reasonable to assume he could take on the Night King.
Of course, what’s more difficult to factor into any such argument is just how powerful the Night King himself really is. Although Game of Thrones briefly showed the Night King’s origins, it never really explored his character, and many things about him remained a mystery – including his powers. He had the ability to raise the dead, turn children into White Walkers, and his ice-javelin throwing skills are seemingly unparalleled, so he obviously has some supernatural abilities. The way he catches Arya mid-air also suggests he has great reflexes and, like other White Walkers, has super strength too, but that still doesn’t give any indication of how he’d fare in a swordfight. There are no signs the White Walkers – including the Night King – are actually incredibly skilled as warriors, and certainly not more so than Jon Snow is evidenced to be. It would’ve been great to see them fight and likely an epic match-up, but based on the Night King being killed by the considerable skills of Arya, the same outcome would’ve happened in a battle with Jon.
