Nina Dobrev kind of came from out of nowhere to make a name for herself. The Canadian-Bulgarian actress first made waves for her appearance in Degrassi: The Next Generation in the mid-2000s. She then went on to nab the lead role in the hugely popular CW show, The Vampire Diaries.

Since Dobrev departed that series, her career has been something of a mixed bag. There were some solid film projects but no real major hits. She scored the lead role on a CBS sitcom titled Fam but that didn’t last long. Still, she has appeared in some quality movies and TV shows throughout her life.

10 Dog Days (6.2)

It’s almost impossible to dislike this movie. While it may not be a classic, there’s just so much to enjoy about it. The cast includes Nina Dobrev, Vanessa Hudgens, Rob Corddry, Lauren Lapkus, Eva Longoria, and Finn Wolfhard. Also, it’s about dogs, who are the most lovable pets in the world.

The actual plot of this 2018 release centers around the fact that the various canines involved manage to bring their otherwise unconnected humans together. Dobrev played Elizabeth, a morning TV newscaster who falls for a football player she interviews named Jimmy (Tone Bell).

9 Chloe (6.3)

There’s a bit of irony in Nina Dobrev starring in a movie called Chloe as she would go on to play a character named Chloe in Lucky Day. Released in 2009, this film saw Dobrev only have a very small supporting role as Anna, a girl hooking up with the protagonist’s son.

Chloe was mainly about Dr. Catherine Stewart (Julianna Moore), a gynecologist who falls in love with Chloe Sweeney (Amanda Seyfried), a call girl she hires to try and expose her husband’s (Liam Neeson) cheating ways. The erotic thriller wasn’t a hit but it captivated those who saw it.

8 Let’s Be Cops (6.4)

Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. proved that they had remarkable chemistry when they starred alongside each other in New Girl. That translated over into 2014’s buddy comedy, Let’s Be Cops. The premise was simple as their characters imitate police officers to get respect.

Of course, this plan doesn’t go well and they end up in way over their heads. Nina Dobrev has another supporting role here, as she plays a waitress named Josie who Wayans Jr.’s character begins a relationship with.

7 The Final Girls (6.6)

For those unaware, the term “final girl” is associated with horror movies where one female typically survives in the end. She became the “final girl,” along the lines of Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween. In 2015, a comedy slasher aptly titled The Final Girls poked fun at that concept.

This film saw a group of high school students get transported into a 1980s slasher movie called Camp Bloodbath. The cast featured brilliant young talents like Taissa Farmiga, Adam DeVine, Alia Shawkat, and Alexander Ludwig. Dobrev portrayed Vicki, the former best friend of the lead.

6 Fugitive Pieces (7.0)

This would have to be the least known entry on the list. Fugitive Pieces was released way back in 2007 and has less than 2,500 reviews on IMDb. It opened the Toronto International Film Festival that year but only saw a small limited run in the United States.

Fugitive Pieces followed Jakob Beer (Stephen Dillane), someone who was orphaned during World War II in Poland and who was saved by an archaeologist. He went on to come of age in Canada. A young Dobrev played a girl named Bella, while the most notable actor involved was Rosamund Pike.

5 Then Came You (7.0)

One of the more recent entries on this list, Then Came You arrived in 2018. Audiences were immediately drawn to the talented cast, which was led by Asa Butterfield (Sex Education), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and Nina Dobrev. The supporting cast of David Koechner, Ken Jeong, and Peyton List were also strong.

The story was focused on Calvin Lewis (Butterfield), a teen with a fear of dying. He met Skye (Williams), a fellow teen with terminal cancer. They quickly became friends and Skye helped Calvin woo the flight attendant he has a crush on, Izzy (Dobrev). The film was ripe with emotional moments.

4 Degrassi: The Next Generation (7.3)

As noted, it was on Degrassi: The Next Generation where Nina Dobrev first rose to fame. The long-running series lasted from 2001 until 2015. Dobrev appeared in over 50 episodes as Mia Jones, having a recurring role in season six, a main role in the next two seasons, and returning as a guest in season nine.

Mia was a controversial character at times, since she arrived at Degrassi as a teen mother, having given birth when she was only 13. She was also JT’s girlfriend when he was tragically killed. Her character went on to nab a modeling gig that also produced some controversial moments. Dobrev joined the cast again for an appearance in Drake’s “I’m Upset” music video.

3 Away From Her (7.5)

It’s another one of the lesser-known films on this list. Away From Her is actually even older than Fugitive Pieces, having been released in 2006. It was Dobrev’s first true movie role as her prior appearance was a cameo as a teenage drug addict.

In Away From Her, she still didn’t have a huge role as Monica but it was more prominent. The story itself was about a couple who has their marriage tested when the wife with Alzheimer’s moves into a nursing home and, with no memories, falls for another patient. Despite not being a huge film, it was nominated for two Oscars.

2 The Vampire Diaries (7.7)

If Degrassi: The Next Generation allowed people to notice Dobrev, The Vampire Diaries is what turned her into a true star. She played Elena Gilbert, the girl at the center of the story as two vampire brothers both fell in love with her. Of course, Dobrev did much more than simply portray Elena.

Dobrev also had the tough task of taking on the role of Elena’s doppelgänger Katherine. It was remarkable watching Dobrev act on both sides, sometimes even playing one who was trying to disguise herself as the other. The series had some incredible characters and plot twists over time. Dobrev left after the sixth season but returned for the finale.

1 The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (8.0)

Released in 2012, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is already considered to be one of the greatest coming-of-age films in history. It told the story of Charlie Kelmeckis (Logan Lerman) as he dealt with the struggles that came with his first year of high school.

Along the way, Charlie befriended the likes of Patrick Stewart (Ezra Miller) and Samantha Sutton (Emma Watson), who he fell in love with. Charlie must deal with an emotional breakdown after recalling some suppressed memories of abuse near the end. Dobrev played Charlie’s sister Candace, who gets the tearful phone call from him the night that his memories return.
