As Nintendo seemingly prepares for the addition of Game Boy games to NSO, a fresh rumor suggests the new library will be followed by the Nintendo 64.

Nintendo has never been short on exclusive games that have been able to stand the test of time. It continues to do that via the Switch with titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey continuing to sell well years after they launched. The need to add older libraries through Nintendo Switch Online further proves its games have some serious staying power.

As for what’s next for NSO’s growing library, rumors that Game Boy and Game Boy Color will be joining the party continue to gather momentum. However, there’s now a fresh rumor doing the rounds that looks beyond even that. Nate Drake recently discussed the potential of Nintendo 64 games coming to NSO. You can check out their comments at the beginning of the podcast below.

“One of the platforms that will be coming to the Nintendo Switch Online in the future is the revolutionary Nintendo 64,” Drake says. They add that if and when that happens, Nintendo could well introduce a whole new tier to NSO for those who want to access the N64 library. A more expensive option since N64 games will obviously be a step above what is already available, even if Game Boy games are added in the near future.

“When Nintendo 64 does come to Nintendo Switch Online it is going to come with a higher-priced tier – a premium version of Nintendo Switch Online.” Nintendo pulling the trigger and adding the N64’s library to NSO is a double-edged sword. While the Switch has proved it can make classic N64 titles look really good, the success of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which includes Super Mario 64, goes to show there’s a lot of money to be made re-releasing the console’s games individually.

That’s why it seems likely that should Nintendo add N64 games to NSO, it is going to cost those who want to play them a little extra. The reports surrounding the potential addition of a Game Boy library to NSO highlighted that Nintendo uses code names for its retro libraries on Switch. There are four codenames in total. Two have been used by the NES and SNES, the third appears to have been reserved for Game Boy, and that leaves one left to go. Perhaps it has already been set aside for the arrival of the N64 on Switch.
