Surprise! There’s a new XCOM game coming out very soon!

This came out of left field, but we’re not complaining. A brand new XCOM game is coming out in less than two weeks. Set five years after the end of XCOM 2, it shows a future Earth where aliens and humanity can get along just fine and coexist peacefully.

2K Games announced today that Firaxis had been working on XCOM: Chimera Squad for the last little while in secret. It’s not an expansion to XCOM 2 (because we seriously don’t need any more of those), but more of a spinoff game.

In XCOM: Chimera Squad, you take control of a team of blended human and alien operatives. The way for Earth is over, and with the Overlords gone, everyone else is left to try and pick up the pieces. City 31 is a model example of what humans and aliens can accomplish if they just cooperate instead of killing each other, and Chimera Squad is the elite force that’s tasked with keeping the peace in this uniquely dangerous age.

As with all XCOM games, everyone has their own unique abilities, but the alien abilities are just a little more unique since you’ve never had them on your side before. Plus you can have a Viper operative, which is basically like a Naga or a Yuan-Ti. How cool is that?

Chimera Squad adds a few new features to the classic turn-based XCOM combat formula. First is Breach Mode, which allows you to storm enemy strongholds by assigning agents to different points of entry and use Breach-specific skills. Second is a new automatic initiative system that interlaces enemy moves with allied agents in alternating turn order.

“With XCOM: Chimera Squad, we felt there were exciting gameplay opportunities yet to be discovered within the XCOM universe,” said lead designer Mark Nauta. “Gameplay like Breach Mode, interleaved turn order, and the introduction of agents as fully fleshed-out characters will revolutionize how the gameplays while still retaining the combat experience that makes the XCOM series so loved by gaming communities around the world.”

The best part? XCOM: Chimera Squad arrives on April 24. Pre-order now for 50% off on Steam or from the Microsoft Windows store.
