Nintendo has issued the creator of the custom Etika joy-con shells, the proceeds of which go to charity, with a cease and desist.

The ongoing global pandemic is probably the number one thing on most people’s minds right now and has been for the majority of 2020. However, the virus itself isn’t the only way in which the pandemic is harming people. Things like lockdown and isolation have also been taking a toll on people’s mental health more than usual this year.

That’s why checking in on others and all-around awareness of mental health is more important than ever. Captain Alex has been trying to keep awareness high in the name of fellow Nintendo community figure Desmond “Etika” Amofah before the pandemic had even begun. Etika tragically took his own life back in 2019, and Alex created the Etikon in his honor and memory.

The Etikon is a black and white shell compatible with the Nintendo Switch’s joy-cons. Since Alex started selling the Etikon shells, he claims to have made $10,000, all of which has gone to the JED Foundation, a mental health and suicide prevention charity. That’s why Nintendo’s decision to issue Alex with a cease and desist order has been met with considerable backlash online. Both Nintendo and Etika were trending earlier today following confirmation of the news.

Alex confirmed the news to be true on JoyConBoyz YouTube channel, which itself was set up in memory of Etika. Apparently, Nintendo is unhappy with the use of the Switch logo on the shells and Alex’s use of the term joy-con while marketing them. This isn’t the first time Nintendo has been criticized for not playing well with others, but due to the subject matter and it standing in the way of a good cause, this might prove to be the most controversial.

Nintendo has never been the best at playing well with others or letting things like this slide. It recently angered Smash Bros. fans when its issuing of a cease and desist order to the franchise’s longest-running tournament in the US led to its cancellation. Nintendo cited the use of illegal copies of Melee and rollback netcode to allow the game to be played online as the reason for issuing the order.
