Nintendo shared some key art from Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’s upcoming “Fantastic Four” DLC pack this morning and it confirms that Dr. Doom will be the main antagonist (as is to be expected). Called “Shadow of Doom,” the Tweet mentions a Spring 2020 window and…that’s honestly it. There really isn’t a lot here.

There aren’t too many villains on the roster in Ultimate Alliance 3, so it may be too much to assume Dr. Doom will be one of the new characters. At the same time, Doom is one of Marvel’s most popular characters. Despite how the Fantastic Four haven’t been allowed into the MCU yet, people still recognize Doom has a menacing figure. Fans have been dying to see an actual good representation of him on the big screen.

This DLC doesn’t foreshadow his MCU debut, though. The character selection in Ultimate Alliance 3 may have been shaped by Disney’s crop of films, but Nintendo and Team Ninja’s take on the comics didn’t forgot some of the more overlooked characters from Marvel’s history. It really is a loving tribute to fans of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s works.

Nintendo hasn’t mentioned what this DLC pack will bring to the base game, but we can make some educated guesses. The previous two packs added a bunch of “horde-mode” styled activities and level-cap increases. Separated from the main campaign, the extra challenges were mostly a way to push your highly leveled characters farther. An extra difficulty mode even pumped up the challenge of the story, making repeat playthroughs a little tougher.

While it’s nice that the content didn’t feel like it was ripped from the main game, it also didn’t add a whole lot of substance. It’s made more frustrating by the fact that players can’t opt to pick up individual packs. You’re either getting all three or nothing. That seems like a calculated decision to get players spending extra dough.

It would be nice to see “Shadow of Doom” include a new, short campaign, but that is likely being too hopeful. This will probably be business as usual, just with a little tinge of Doom.
