Nintendos YTD Switch Sales In The UK Are Double What They Were In 2019

Nintendo Switch sales YTD in the UK are double what they were at the same point last year, and its rivals are having pretty good years too.

Back in March, which feels like it was three lifetimes ago at this point, many parts of the world were thrust into lockdown. As the COVID-19 outbreak became a global pandemic, governments attempted to get people to stay inside as much as possible to prevent the spread of the virus. That led to people turning to indoor entertainment more than ever before.

That entertainment came in the form of board games, streaming services, and, of course, video games. Anyone on the fence about buying that game or that console they had been fawning over for so long was tipped into doing so just to help kill all of that unexpected extra time. As lockdown restrictions are loosened and sales from the past three months are dissected, it turns out more people than anyone could have imagined turned to gaming during the world’s time of need.

Nintendo’s Switch sales, in particular, have flourished not only over the past three months but so far in 2020. According to Video Games Chronicle, Nintendo has sold twice as many Switch consoles in the UK so far in 2020 than it had sold at the same point in 2019. Sales peaked when the country went into lockdown in March, and again in May once Nintendo got a handle on the situation and recovered from the consoles selling out around the world.

Nintendo isn’t the only gaming company to have benefitted from the pandemic in the UK. Both the PS4 and Xbox One’s sales are 50% and 25% higher respectively than they were versus the same time last year. Momentum doesn’t appear to be slowing either as restrictions are eased since June’s figures were also very high compared to the same month last year.

While reports on the exact figures have been mixed, the Switch appears to be smashing all sorts of sales records so far in 2020. In both the hardware and games departments. Overall, data from market research firm GfK reports that more than half a million consoles were sold in the UK in March and April of this year alone. Time will tell whether that prompts more people to buy next-gen consoles at the end of 2020 or stick with the new ones they bought during lockdown.
