There’s a chance that if Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, they could be joined by their characters’ respective love interests, Mary Jane Watson (Kristen Dunst) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but various theories and rumors currently surround the two Spider-Man actresses.

For a long time now, it’s been apparent that Spider-Man: No Way Home will utilize the scope of the multiverse to unite all three Spider-Man franchises. Since it is known that Doctor Strange and the multiverse will be at play, it appears that their worlds becoming separate timelines in the MCU is how the upcoming Phase 4 film is incorporating characters from the two preceding Spider-Man franchises. Somehow, Spider-Man 2’s Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro (Jamie Foxx) will be involved in some capacity. There’s also evidence for the inclusion of other villains from Raimi’s trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man movies as well.

Adding to the excitement of the two franchises becoming a part of the MCU are all the reports that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is going to cross paths with his two live-action counterparts. The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer didn’t show either Maguire or Garfield, but their absence did little to convince fans that they won’t be there. Even denials from the actors haven’t killed the reports about their return. As of now, the two coming back for Spider-Man: No Way Home is being treated as a badly-kept secret that may not officially be let out of the bag until the second trailer. But while most aren’t really doubting the Maguire and Garfield rumors, there are fewer reasons to be sure about Kristen Dunst and Emma Stone. Here’s everything that’s been said about the possibilities of their characters being in No Way Home, and whether or not audiences should have an expectation of seeing them on the big screen again.

Rumors About Stone & Dunst Returning For Spider-Man 3 Explained

No Way Home Will Emma Stone & Kirsten Dunst Return All Evidence

Much of the confidence that fans have in Maguire and Garfield being in Spider-Man: No Way Home stems from a Collider report from December 2020. The article stated that Garfield, Maguire, and Dunst would all come back to reprise their roles, in addition to the appearances made by Molina and Foxx. Emma Stone was mentioned too, but in regards to her character in particular, the report offered less in the way of assurances, saying that she would be around, “pregnancy permitting.” Since much has been said about Maguire and Garfield joining the MCU both before and after the Collider report, it does hold a degree f weight, but its claims remain unconfirmed by Marvel or Sony Pictures – for now.

Emma Stone Denies Having A Role In Spider-Man 3

No Way Home Will Emma Stone & Kirsten Dunst Return All Evidence

In a May 2021 interview, Emma Stone said that she was aware of the rumors about her playing Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but denied having any involvement in the project. But this on its own doesn’t necessarily debunk the rumors, since she wouldn’t be the first actor to refute a report about being in a Marvel movie, only to appear in it anyway. One of the most recent examples of this is Jonathan Majors claiming not to having any knowledge about the rumor that he would play Kang in Loki. Months later, the actor had a shocking cameo as an alternate version of Kang in the Loki season 1 finale. That’s why the denials of Holland and Maguire about the first two Spider-Man actors appearing in No Way Home don’t really confirm or debunk anything. This idea, of course, would also apply to Stone.

Evidence For Kristen Dunst Joining The MCU

No Way Home Will Emma Stone & Kirsten Dunst Return All Evidence

Apart from the Collider report, there really isn’t any proof that Emma Stone will make the jump to the MCU. However, there are a few pieces of evidence that support the theories about Kristen Dunst. In early August, photos of Dunst at a filming studio in Los Angeles began to circulate. What made them so interesting was that they put her at the same place and time where Marvel was doing reshoots for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Other photos reveal that Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield were also in the area, presumably for the same reason.

Are Dunst & Stone Returning For Spider-Man 3?

Looking at what’s known about Spider-Man: No Way Home, it’s at least possible that both Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy will have a presence in the long-awaited multiverse adventure, but one feels more likely than the other. As of now, there just isn’t that much evidence to support Stone being in Spider-Man 3. Even the Collider report that discussed her inclusion made it clear that her return isn’t certain by any means, with her pregnancy being a possible reason for why she may not show up.

All things considered, Emma Stone may not play Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3, but the situation with Kristen Dunst and Mary Jane Watson is an entirely different story. The photos of her in Los Angeles do go long a way toward strengthening those rumors. It’s looking more and more probable that the Phase 4 movie will feature a scene or two of her character interacting with Maguire’s Spider-Man.

Spider-Man 3 bringing back Dunst and Stone could be related to actor availability, or it could be an intentional move. After all, Dunst actually feels more necessary to the story than Stone’s character. It shouldn’t be forgotten that just like her comic book counterpart, Gwen Stacy was murdered during the big fight with the Green Goblin in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Theoretically, Marvel can use her again by depicting a timeline where she survives, but that wouldn’t be a proper continuation of the story of The Amazing Spider-Man movies. If Marvel has any intention of providing closure for its two Spider-Man franchises, it shouldn’t undo any of the films’ endings. Instead, it would be better to show how Garfield’s Spider-Man is doing without Gwen in his life. Some were hoping that Marvel might use Stone to introduce Spider-Gwen, but if this character were to be introduced, it may be best to have a different actress play the role in order to avoid timeline confusion. Spider-Gwen would be from another corner of the multiverse, so it would make sense for her not to be associated with The Amazing Spider-Man characters.

Unlike Gwen, Kristen Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson is very much alive and in need of another movie appearance since Spider-Man 4 never happened. Through Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel can finally reveal what came next for her and Peter, and if their relationship was able to preserve all the challenges that accompanied Spider-Man’s crime-fighting activities.
