O Brother Where Art Thou Cast & Characters

Here’s a quick guide to O Brother, Where Art Thou’s? cast and characters. O Brother, Where Art Thou? is the eighth film made by fraternal directing duo Joel and Ethan Coen, better known as the Coen Brothers. Released in 2000, the movie is a comedy-drama that acts as a loose retelling of classic Greek poet Homer’s epic The Odyssey that transposes the action from ancient Greece to the American South during the tail end of the Great Depression.

Set in rural Mississippi, O Brother, Where Art Thou? follows three convicts who escape from a chain gang to rescue a stash of hidden treasure before the valley it’s buried in is flooded to create a hydroelectric dam. As they try to stay one step ahead of the law, the trio journey across the state and encounter a whole host of colorful personalities along the way that correspond to characters featured in Homer’s poem The Odyssey.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? was a critical hit that earned two Academy Award nominations and spawned one of the best movie soundtracks of the last two decades. The film also features many of the big-name talents the Coen Brothers are known for frequently collaborating with – George Clooney and John Goodman included – and here’s a breakdown of the main O Brother, Where Art Thou’s? cast and characters.

George Clooney – Ulysses Everett McGill

Clooney has starred in three more Coen Brothers outings since O Brother, Where Art Thou? including Burn After Reading and Hail, Caesar!.

John Turturro – Pete Hogwallop

Everett’s fugitive companion Pete Hogwallop is rough-around-the-edges and prone to angry outbursts but also loyal to a fault. He’s played by actor John Turturro – another of the Coen Brothers’ frequent collaborators, who is known for playing Jesus Quintana in their cult black comedy The Big Lebowski.

Tim Blake Nelson – Delmar O’Donnell

Watchmen star Tim Blake Nelson plays Everett and Pete’s accomplice Delmar O’Donnell. Delmer is a dim-witted but kindhearted man and easily the most decent of the trio. O Brother, Where Art Thou? was Nelson’s first Coen Brothers movie although he worked with them again in 2018’s The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs.

Chris Thomas King – Tommy Johnson

Musician and actor Chris Thomas King plays a talented blues musician named Tommy Johnson that Everett, Pete and Delmar meet on their travels. He performs a version of the Skip James song “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” in the film which is also featured on the Grammy-winning O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack.

John Goodman – Daniel “Big Dan” Teague

Some of John Goodman’s best roles have been in many Coen Brothers films – from Barton Fink to The Big Lebowski – and his part in the O Brother, Where Art Thou? cast is Daniel “Big Dan” Teague. Big Dan is a one-eyed conman and Ku Klux Klan member who poses as a Bible salesman.
