Every Star Wars fan is looking forward to Ewan McGregor’s return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Disney’s Kenobi show; however, most fans don’t know that he faces more than Darth Maul and Darth Vader in Star Wars Legends. Obi-Wan’s time on Tatooine is still somewhat mysterious, though Disney highlights some key moments in comics and cartoons. On the other hand, Dark Horse’s Star Wars comics shed more light on this time, including his battle with A’Sharad Hett, a Tusken Raider with the Dark Side of the Force who would become a Sith greater than even Vader himself.

The indigenous Tusken Raiders, or the “Sand People” of Tatooine, remain one of the most obscure characters in the galaxy. According to Timothy Truman and Al Rio’s Star Wars #11 from 1998, Tusken Raiders are a proper species, but they sometimes adopt or abduct the orphans of other humanoids. A’Sharad Hett, the son of Sharad Hett and K’Sheek, is one of the few human Sand People. K’Sheek forever disappears within a sandstorm shortly after his birth. Aurra Sing later kills his father during his teenage years, leaving Ki-Adi-Mundi to take A’Sharad as his padawan.

Instead of striking down A’Sharad Hett, Obi-Wan urges him to leave Tatooine and never return. Obi-Wan then removes Hett’s mask, an act forbidden among the Tusken Raiders (similar to Din Djarin’s Mandalorian clan—Children of the Watch). Hett knew the Tusken Raiders would ban him from their clans after seeing this; therefore, Hett leaves Tatooine. Obi-Wan hopes he will one day return to his Jedi ways, but this expectation couldn’t have been further from what ends up happening, as Hett eventually becomes Darth Krayt. As Krayt he would become an absolute nightmare, easily mastering force lightning and obliterating entire squadrons of soldiers with ease.

Although this forgotten confrontation isn’t canon anymore, several other Legends characters have made their way back. For instance, Thrawn made his way back in Star Wars: Rebels. Furthermore, Darth Revan, Bastila Shan, and all the other Knights of the Old Republic characters could regain their canon status after the KOTOR remaster. Both Legends and canon Star Wars have several hits and misses. It would only make sense for Disney to adopt the greatest tales from Star Wars Legends’ talented and creative minds, including Obi-Wan’s duel with A’Sharad Hett.
