What do Pokémon and One Piece have in common? Well, there’s the fact that they’re both juggernauts when it comes to Japanese media. These two series have been the king of their medium for quite some time now. Pokémon video game-wise and One Piece on the anime and manga side.

So what if we took these two series and mashed them together? Just imagine if Pokemon were in the world of One Piece. There are tons of characters that would make us wonder about their Pokémon teams, but the one that would probably have the most interesting team would definitely be Luffy. Not only is he the main character of the series but the fact that he’s so head over heels for adventure and friendship make him a prime candidate for the role of a Pokémon trainer trying to be the very best like no one ever was.

7 AMBIPOM

The purple two-tailed normal type Pokémon would be the most obvious when it comes to a team of pocket monsters for the captain of the Straw Hats. This little guy pretty much sums up Luffy’s personality perfectly not only in his appearance but in the way he moves as well.

Ambipom is a Pokémon that’s well versed in speed and fighting ability, equipped with his two tails featuring big palms. It also has a big thing for friendship, as Ambipom likes working with others. Sounds just about perfect for a guy that even has “Monkey” in his name. Not to mention Luffy kind of resembles Ambipom if you put their faces side by side, especially because of the smiles.

6 SNORLAX

Snorlax really seems like it’d be the perfect Pokémon buddy for Luffy, after a snack, that is. Both of them have a giant belly that operates as if it’s an endless garbage disposal for food only, and both of them are just about impossible to wake up from an after-meal nap. In fact, fat Luffy sort of resembles Snorlax.

This huge Pokémon only wakes up to eat and needs 900 pounds of food per day, which may be a huge issue for someone that eats as much as Luffy, but knowing him he won’t let a bit of an appetite stop a partnership. However, there may be a few fights over whos going to be eating the most of Sanji’s cooking from time to time.

5 GOLEM

This one might seem a bit left-field compared to the first two Pokémon but Golem seriously seems like a Pokémon that Luffy would fall in love with at first sight based on his appearance alone. Golem is a rock/ground-type Pokémon and his looks reflect that as he is literally a rock ball with a reptile-like head sticking out.

In all honesty, Luffy would look at this guy and get the idea to make himself into a slingshot to fire him out at large enemies. Something says that this powerful Pokémon would instantly attract the pirate captain for sure.

4 WOBBUFFET

Wobbufett is another Pokémon that perfectly suits Luffy on both a visual and personality-based level. Not only is Wobbuffet a very dopey Pokémon that constantly goes with its owner’s plans no matter how ridiculous, but its also a Pokémon with a rubber-type exterior to match with Luffy.

It’s also a Pokémon that is usually overprotective of itself, staying in caves to keep itself protected, and we all know how Luffy is when he finds a friend in need. This Pokémon that is hard to put into submission would be one of the best to be at Luffy’s side.

3 INFERNAPE

Infernape is a Pokémon that fans constantly compare to Luffy. Not only for the fact that he’s a monkey, but for his moveset in general. Both of these guys use a fire fist attack. They probably would very easily get along with each other.

He uses a unique martial art exclusive to his kind that uses each limb on his body, something that Luffy could surely relate to. Not to mention his sheer fighting spirit would surely be something that Luffy would quickly grow to admire and couldn’t pass up on adding to his team. Just imagine both of them sending out a flame fist at the same time.

2 LAPRAS

If we’re talking a Pokémon that would be a must-have for someone like Luffy, then we really need to look no further than Lapras. This is one water/ice type Pokémon with some great use outside of battle will probably be the deciding factor for a Pokémon Trainer Luffy.

Lapras is a big water-type Pokémon that is used by many trainers of the Pokémon world to travel across the sea. This is perfect for someone like Luffy who basically lives his life on the ocean but isn’t able to swim due to the effects of the Devil Fruit. Not to mention it might even be able to use its abilities to help out with a fire type team that Akainu would probably have.

1 PSYDUCK

Of course, every Pokémon trainer is usually only equipped with a team of six Pokémon, but that doesn’t seem too Luffy does it? Luffy is the type of character that would much rather break the rules any chance he has when given the option, especially if there’s a chance to make a friend out of that rule-breaking.

This is why he’d probably have a Psyduck at his side as well. Psyduck is a Pokémon that not many trainers are able to put up with. His odd nature and unpredictability make him very undesirable to most. However, there is no doubt that Luffy would take this guy in and let him join the team. Even though Pysduck might just be chilling on the sidelines until he miraculously comes through with a big save every once in a while.
