The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards were finally released on January 13th, 2020. There has been quite a lot of discussion over the nominations, but also about who and what didn’t receive any recognition. With The Irishman and Joker leading the pack, some of your favorite movies of the year will be celebrated on February 9th. However, there were a ton of movies released in the past year, and not all of them could have their night in the spotlight. So, here are 5 Oscar nominations that were totally well deserved, and 5 movies or people that definitely got snubbed.

10 Snubbed: Christian Bale, Actor in a Supporting Role

Oscars 2020 5 WellDeserved Nominations (& 5 That Were Snubbed)

Christian Bale and Matt Damon starred in this biography race-car drama, Ford v Ferrari, which is actually nominated for Best Picture. Despite scoring some attention, this movie received no nominations for the cast. Matt Damon played Carroll Shelby, a car designer, and Christian Bale played Ken Miles, a driver. Together, they were brilliant, but Bale’s British accent and eccentric, honest character stole the spotlight. While he received a Golden Globe nomination for the role, he got snubbed at the Oscars and was not nominated. He brought this character to life in all his Bale brilliance, and definitely deserved a nod.

9 Deserved: Al Pacino, Actor in a Supporting Role

This category was a tough one to make it into. While Bale was snubbed, there are no complaints about Al Pacino being nominated. He brought the infamous Teamster, Jimmy Hoffa, to life in the Martin Scorsese flick, The Irishman. This cast was stacked, but Al Pacino stood out with his angry monologues and mesmerizing mannerisms.

In fact, he’s definitely a front-runner for the category. This Netflix drama is infatuating from start to finish, but was made even better by its talented cast.

8 Snubbed: Awkwafina, Actress in a Leading Role

Oscars 2020 5 WellDeserved Nominations (& 5 That Were Snubbed)

This movie altogether certainly deserved more recognition than it received. Awkwafina was nominated at the Golden Globes for her role as Billi, and even won her category. However, at the Academy Awards, this brilliant and wholesome actress was left out. This movie tells a pure and interesting tale of a Chinese family, where American and Eastern ideologies must find their balance. Awkwafina was breathtaking and relatable, and it’s a shame she won’t be getting a nod at the awards.

7 Deserved: Noah Baumbach, Writing (Original Screenplay)

This movie is certainly being recognized this year, and there are few complaints about it. Noah Baumbach is an incredibly talented and raw director, and this movie is amazingly honest and pure. Created by Netflix, this film takes a look at a couple through a coast-to-coast divorce, who try their hardest to maintain their family.

This story is mesmerizing, and Noah’s directing was also beautiful. However, it’s the screenplay that stole our hearts, and it certainly deserves a nod at the Academy Awards.

6 Snubbed: The Farewell, Best Picture

Oscars 2020 5 WellDeserved Nominations (& 5 That Were Snubbed)

Again, this movie as a whole was snubbed. This film could’ve been nominated for a ton of categories – including Writing (Original Screenplay) or even Directing for Lulu Wang. Mainly though, this movie should’ve been looked at for Best Picture. This is an authentic and beautifully made film about culture and family, and it’s definitely a shame that it won’t be recognized for its wholesome comedy and drama.

5 Deserved: Scarlett Johansson, Actress in a Leading Role

Oscars 2020 5 WellDeserved Nominations (& 5 That Were Snubbed)

While this movie has its fair share of nominations, this one is probably one of the most well deserved. Scarlett Johansson is probably best known as the Black Widow or for many popular sci-fi flicks and rom-coms. However, this movie let her show her true talents, and proved that this actress has a lot to offer. Her long monologues, tearful conversations, and angry gestures were absolutely flawless, and Scar-Jo certainly deserves some recognition for it.

4 Snubbed: Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson, Actor in a Leading Role

Oscars 2020 5 WellDeserved Nominations (& 5 That Were Snubbed)

The Lighthouse, created by A24 Studios, only received one nomination for the year, for Cinematography. While this is certainly deserved, the two brilliant actors of this film were totally snubbed. While Robert Pattinson is actually set to be the new batman, he also is incredibly talented and versatile.

Of course, Willem Dafoe is always mesmerizing, but this role proved how brilliant he truly is. With these two being the only characters of the movie, their accents, partnership, monologues, angry masculinity, and drunkenness was nothing short of masterful. Both of these men deserved a nod.

This adaptation of Little Women is also dominating the Academy Awards this year. While Saoirse Ronan also scored a nomination for Actress in a Leading Role, Florence Pugh came fresh out of 2019 and managed to earn herself a nomination. She plays Amy in this classic tale, and her character was nothing short of infatuating. Pugh is a new actress of the year, and this nod towards her talent was incredibly well deserved.

2 Snubbed: Greta Gerwig, Directing

Oscars 2020 5 WellDeserved Nominations (& 5 That Were Snubbed)

There’s been a lot of talk about the directing category. While all of the nominees produced incredible works, it was disappointing to see Greta Gerwig not be apart of the list. She brought Little Women to the big screen in what is probably the best version yet. While she is nominated for Adapted Screenplay, her directing brilliance was definitely missed by the Academy. This movie is a visual treat, and every part of it was masterful and wholesome.

1 Deserved: Bong Joon Ho, Directing

Again, every director nominated is truly brilliant. However, one that is definitely appreciated and deserved is for Bong Joon Ho and his movie, Parasite. This Korean film is the first to be making waves in categories other than Foreign Film. Nominated for Best Picture and Directing, Bong Joon Ho certainly deserves recognition for this dark, deep tale of class and family. In one of the most unique and devastating movies of the year, Bong Joon Ho created an absolute masterpiece.
