The hit Starz romantic fantasy Outlander has as its central protagonist one of the most remarkable women on popular television. The series, based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, is all set for its sixth season after a successful run of five years.

However, aside from Claire, there is a fascinating range of characters eliciting a gamut of human emotions from the audience. Some of them are strong and heroic, and others vile and evil, but nevertheless intriguing. Here are ten such characters who have shown exceptional strength of character and heroism, and those who have repulsed fans with their sheer darkness, ranked.

10 Claire Randall-Fraser

Claire is a feisty, extremely intelligent woman who can adapt herself to any situation, which is how she manages to adjust to the strange way of life she gets thrust into when she lands in the 18th century.

Claire had been a combat nurse during World War II and went onto become the only woman in her batch of medical students, thus proving how extraordinarily brave she was. She withstood the horrors of war, time and time again in both centuries, and battles the challenges of living in a wilder, more primitive time on a daily basis. She is, without a doubt, the hero leading the series from the front.

9 Jamie Fraser

The incredibly handsome and dashing Scottish Highlander, Jamie has seen a lot of trauma in his life. He is a brave soldier, but it is not the battles on the ground but the sadistic torture he underwent willingly in the hands of Jonathan Randall that makes him a true hero.

For those who remember, the time Jamie spent inside Wentworth Prison with Black Jack Randall was some of the most difficult moments to watch. Even before that, he was flogged severely by the same British army officer and bears those scars that act as a reminder of what he had been through. Jamie is infinitely brave and can go to any lengths for his family and his kin.

8 Murtagh Fitzgibbons

Murtagh was Jamie’s godfather and one of the most beloved characters on the show. Murtagh was devoted to his godson and never left his side if he could help it. He might have been a bit reckless towards the end, but always a hero.

Murtagh, in fact, died a hero when he was shot during the Battle of Alamance, a battle he himself instigated as he bravely fought for the cause of the poor farmers against the corrupt tax collectors of the time.

7 Brianna Fraser-McKenzie

Claire and Jamie’s daughter Brianna is perhaps not the most fascinating character in the series, but she is nevertheless very brave and has proved her heroism time and again.

Brianna didn’t think twice before traveling through the stones to find her parents and warn them of their impending death. She survived sexual assault and was strong enough to face her attacker alone, to get over her fears. Brianna was an understated hero in her own way.

6 Roger McKenzie

Roger might be an insecure, conflicted character, slipping into what some might call toxic masculinity at times, but he is nonetheless quite heroic.

Roger too, like Brianna, passed through the stones, to look for the ‘lass’ he loved; from surviving being a captive of the Native Americans to almost being hanged, Roger has been through a fair bit of trouble. He also, albeit unwillingly, adapted to life in the 18th century for the sake of his family, which was really rather brave.

5 Marsali

Marsali, the daughter of Laoghaire and wife to Fergus Fraser, was yet another understated hero of the series. She might not have been so much in the limelight as Claire or Brianna, nor has she fought battles, but she is a level-headed, brave girl not afraid to take on the world.

Marsali, sensible and broad-minded as she was (unlike her mother) trained as an apprentice under Claire and soon learned to heal people. She was a firebrand who held her little family together even when her husband was unable to find proper employment. Young Marsali qualifies as a hero in her own right.

4 Geillis Duncan

Moving on from the heroic to the more villainous, Geillis was definitely a hero in the first season as she bravely and selflessly sacrificed her life and dignity for Claire’s sake at the witch trials.

However, from a hero, she turned into a villain when in season 3, she became the chief antagonist, the unhinged woman who believed in human sacrificial rituals and killed at whim to get what she wanted.

3 The Duke Of Sandringham

The Duke was more despicable than outright villainous perhaps, but he gets ranked higher than Geillis for his loathsome nature because unlike Geillis, he was never shown to be selfless.

The Duke of Sandringham was a hypocrite, a slippery eel who pretended to care for Jamie at first and favor him with his influence. But it soon turned out that he had extremely dubious morals, and was nothing but selfish and wily. The flamboyant Simon Callow left a lasting impression as the deceitful Duke.

2 Stephen Bonnet

One of the true villains of the series and the main antagonist of season 5, Stephen Bonnet was the vile man who attacked Brianna when she was traveling alone. He also looted Jamie and Claire’s boat on the way to River Run, killing their friends, this after Claire had healed him and Jamie had helped him escape the prospect of getting hanged.

Bonnet was a dark soul and cast an evil shadow wherever he went. He kept popping up, and although his entire storyline with Brianna was rather unpleasant, actor Edward Speleers did a commendable job playing the Irish villain.

1 Jonathan Randall

Of course, the biggest villain of the series and also the most fascinating was Captain Jonathan Randall, the sadistic ancestor of Frank Randall several generations over.

‘Black Jack Randall’ was evil personified, a heartless man who derived some kind of ecstasy from torturing others, both bodily and emotionally, and he took a particular liking to Jamie. Although Outlander has had other villains since Randall’s death, he remains unforgettable for his intriguing, albeit repulsive, character.
