The 2019 Overwatch League regular season ended with the biggest party of the year. The Los Angeles Valiant hosted the Kit-Kat Rivalry Weekend, which promised to bring great matches and an electric atmosphere to the end of the season. The rivalry weekend highlighted some of the biggest match-ups of their year, the strongest rivalries in the league, dunk tanks, and some spicy drama.
Overwatch League juggernauts were on display over the weekend. The number one ranked Vancouver Titans faced the second and third ranked teams in the league – New York Excelsior and the San Francisco Shock. The matches were a possible preview of the playoffs and they lived up to the hype. Vancouver went 1-1, losing to the Shock and beating New York. The Vancouver Titans and San Francisco Shock match was one of the best (if not the best) matches of the year and looked like a championship preview.
The “Battle For LA” was more important than ever, as the Valiant needed just one more victory to secure a spot in the season play-ins and the Gladiators were hoping to play spoiler. “Shields Up” and “Wings Out” were chanted throughout the arena as the crowd cheered on the epic rivalry. The Gladiators won the match 3-1, but it was incredibly hard fought from both teams and one of the best matches of the year.
San Francisco finished the weekend by beating the Valiant for the “California Cup” and ended the Valiant’s chances at a spot in the playoffs.
The Kit-Kat Rivalry Weekend was a rousing success, and showed what the future of the league could be. The Overwatch League will be featured across the world next season and the homestands this year (Dallas, Atlanta, LA) showed promise for what the league is doing going forward. The excitement felt at an all time high and you get the idea that fans in these cities and countries are anxiously waiting for their team to come home. Every homestand felt unique and each one brought something fun to the table.
The Kit-Kat Rivalry weekend was the perfect way to end the 2019 Overwatch League regular season. It was a party that celebrated the league, the players, and most importantly – the fans. The venue was amazing and the crowd was louder than ever. If the Kit-Kat Rivalry Weekend, and the Dallas and Atlanta Homestands were any indication of what is going to happen in the 2020 season, the Overwatch League has an exciting future ahead and one that will help the league gain even more popularity. The road forward is bright and the parties have only just begun. The 2020 season will kick off in New York on February 8th.
