The world of the Paper Mario series has always had fun with its paper crafted aesthetic. Everything from mechanics to visual gags play with the fact that everyone in these worlds are made of paper. Paper Mario: The Origami King continues that trend by taking the logical next step and introducing a new origami element to the series through two new characters: King Olly and Olivia. But who are these two new figures, and how do they fit into the world of the Mushroom Kingdom? That’s what we’re here to explore. Some character spoilers will be ahead, as well as the initial setup of the game’s plot.

The Setup

As with many Mario titles, the events of Paper Mario: The Origami King are set in motion by Mario receiving and invitation from Princess Peach. This time she asks him and Luigi to join her at the Origami Festival. The pair of brothers note how eerily empty Toad Town and Peach’s Castle are when they arrive, but continue on inside. After finding themselves locked in, the two split up with Mario finding Peach not much later. Only Peach isn’t her normal paper self, but has been folded into an origami version. She asks very strange questions and wants Mario to fold himself, too, but no matter what his response is, ends up sending him down through a trap door to the dungeon. It is here that Mario first uses his new folding powers to rescue Olivia. She teases Mario about him probably wanting to know more about her before tagging along with him to escape.

After an encounter with an origami Bowser, the two escape the dungeon and encounter Peach once again. She is accompanied by what at first appears to be a yellow Shy-Guy, but turns out to be the one behind all the folding business going on. Olivia immediately recognizes him as her brother Olly, and pleads with him to stop what he is doing. Olly, who now calls himself King Olly has decided to overthrow the Mushroom Kingdom and fold it into his very own origami kingdom. The pair escape, but their adventure to rescue the kingdom has only just begun.

Who Is Olivia?

Olivia, brand new to the world of Mario, paper or otherwise, is initially a very mysterious character. She is not a regular paper person like everyone else in the world of Paper Mario, but an origami person. She is the younger sister of Olly, though it is revealed that Olly actually created Olivia himself. Despite this, she stands against Olly’s ambitions to take over the paper world and fights alongside Mario to stop his plans.

Who Is Olly?

The story of Olly may seem simple at first, but his character and motivations to take over the Mushroom Kingdom actually go quite deep. Olly was created by the Origami Craftsman to be part of the kingdom’s origami festival. The Craftsman added a message on him when creating him hoping he would become a good king one day. Olly misunderstood the meaning of this message, and instead began to hate everything made of paper and not origami. This inspired him to create his younger sister Olivia to help him in his efforts to take over the kingdom and enslave all the citizens by folding them into origami.
