Once you’ve gotten past the rather messy first Act of Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, you’ll realize just how ambitious the game is compared to its indie contemporaries. Your alignment actually gets rewarded and it’s one of the few CRPGs that allows a “murder hobo” path. With that said, the game overextends in some aspects that it leaves some of its bases wanting.
Plenty of areas in the game need some love and care but it might be a while before the developers address those. That’s why turning to the modding community is a good way to improve the game. The game’s own community has devised its own fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and gameplay enhancements to make Wrath of the Righteous a more compelling CRPG. Here’s their labor of love.
10 Tweakable Weapon Categories
Have you ever wished that your monk could use finesse weapons or other types? Maybe a wizard who can cast spells with swords instead of wands? Well, Tweakable Weapon Categories lets you do just that. In a nutshell, it gives you freedom in weapon categorization.
This nifty little mod lets you set the weapon stats or perks and mix and match them so class restrictions or gameplay styles don’t apply anymore. This has far-reaching implications as class playstyle can change dramatically with a modified weapon.
9 Alignment Shifts That Aren’t Dumb
One Pathfinder player got a little too fired up with how Wrath of the Righteous handles its own moral alignment system (based on Dungeons & Dragons). Apparently (and at the time of writing), there’s a big chance you’ll end up neutral whenever you mix your responses. Some players might not like this approach.
That’s why Alignment Shifts That Aren’t Dumb seeks to fix this subjective issue with the mechanic. The mod makes it so that shifts in dialogue choices to an opposite end of the spectrum end up skipping the middle of that spectrum, making the alignment dip into the extreme end with each choice.
8 Free Camera
Wrath of the Righteous was already ahead of the competition when it included a decent rotating camera instead of the locked isometric view. However, even its implementation can get a bit clunky, especially with all kinds of visual obstructions. It makes planning encounters needlessly trickier. Other times, the camera just bugs out in rooftops or towers.
Free Camera lets you have more control over the camera. It’s not only great for combat or exploration but also for taking screenshots. You’ll be able to zoom in much better and scope out the finer details of the characters and the environments.
7 Fast Travel
Don’t you just hate it when you want to backtrack because you might have missed something but your party keeps moving so very slowly? Fast Travel is one of the solutions to that annoying issue.
You can use it to speed up party movement on the global map to save your time and patience. You can also change the party speed in instances, battle speed, and exploration speed. This mod is almost necessary for subsequent playthroughs.
6 PathfinderAutoBuff – Wrath of the Righteous
One of the most noticeable missing features in Wrath of the Righteous is that there’s currently no official option to queue out your actions in real-time mode. Heck, even turn-based mode could use that improvement. The modders took it upon themselves to code a script that lets you do that in-game.
It’s called PathfinderAutoBuff and it’s one of many. The mod is primarily called AutoBuff since its most prominent purpose is for party members to automatically apply buffs that you designate at the start of each encounter. However, it also works when lining up other actions during real-time combat.
5 Enhanced Inventory
The user interface is one of the areas where Wrath of the Righteous is sorely lacking and could use some community intervention. Sure enough, some players were way ahead. Mods like the Enhanced Inventory makes the UI more accessible and less of a chore to use.
Granted, it’s limited to inventory management but you’ll be spending most of your time with the UI in that partition anyway. This thoughtful mod adds several item filters, a search bar, and highlights so you can sort out and check your gear faster. You’ll soon find yourself relying too much on this mod.
4 Scaling Cantrips
What’s sadder than running out of spells for the day in this game? Having to use lackluster and weak cantrips. Cantrips in Pathfinder are different compared to those in Dungeons & Dragons, sadly. The mod Scaling Cantrips, however, makes everything better.
It tweaks the cantrips so that they scale the same way those in D&D do, making them still useful in late-game. Be warned though, this might make spellcaster classes unbalanced and more overpowered to the point where you can consider the mod a cheat.
3 Combat Relief
One of the most infuriating setbacks that can happen in the game is when you’re rushing your party out of exhaustion in the global map and then a pesky succubi squad decides to have fun with them. This random encounter among many can easily result in a party wipe and only serves to artificially prolong the game since you’ll be reloading anyway.
So do yourself a favor and save time with the Combat Relief mod. It removes random encounters and also makes Crusade Battles an automatic victory for you. In case you miss getting tortured by the game, you can switch off the mod with a few clicks.
2 Heroes of Stolen Lands
No gameplay modifications or fixes here. Heroes of Stolen Lands is a good and always welcome aesthetic mod. It’s actually just a collection of several hero portraits that you can use in case you find the default ones or the Kingmaker ones too unfitting.
You get tons of options here. The mod adds 456 unique portraits. The author claims that all of them are lore-friendly and fit in with the general theme and aesthetic of Wrath of the Righteous or Pathfinder as a whole. Don’t go roleplaying without this.
1 Toy Box
Finally, a mod to end all mods. Just kidding, Toy Box is merely a meta-mod that includes several functions some of which are present in the aforementioned mods above. This one is all about the freedom to modify the game’s mechanics and character and weapon stats.
The most interesting part is that you can add non-playable NPCs to the party. Want to add the Queen so Daeran can shove her inside a pit spell? This mod has you covered. There’s also a myriad of cheats and quality-of-life improvements so you can feel more like a Dungeon Master than a player.
