The CW series Supergirl has cast Smallville alum Sam Witwer as Agent Liberty. From one Superman world to the next, Witwer becomes the latest to join the CW’s ever-growing DC Universe. With a solid previous performance behind him, there’s little doubt he’s up for the challenge.

Witwer is no stranger to the Superman world, having played killing machine Doomsday on Smallville in season 8. A Jekyll and Hyde like villain, Doomsday faced off against Clark Kent, succumbing to the superhero after his split personalities were separated. Ironically, Witwer’s previous credits also include a guest starring role on Once Upon a Time, where he played the real literary Jekyll and Hyde. His other roles include Star Wars: Rebels, Being Human and The Mist. While many of his acting credits may appear to be short guest stints, his time immersed in the Superman universe through Smallville makes him uniquely equipped to take on this latest character.

According to EW, when Supergirl returns this fall to the CW for season 4, Witwer will be taking on the role of Agent Liberty. A vicious and fearsome leader, Agent Liberty leads the hate group Children of Liberty, an organization that believes in human superiority. He’s “a brilliant orator in the guise of a family man,” the show’s producers have said, eluding to his impressive power of persuasion. This is a man who can convince just about anyone to support his cause. With Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and the DEO fighting for the integration of aliens among the populace, the introduction of Agent Liberty is sure to shake things up.

Witwer is not the first alumni of Smallville to be cast in Supergirl. Erica Durance – who portrayed Lois Lane – has appeared several times during the series as Kara’s mother, Alura Zor-El. Laura Vandervoort – who played Supergirl herself on Smallville – also guest starred during season 1 as Indigo. One wonders if Smallville lead Tom Welling might ever be persuaded to make an appearance, now that he’s seemingly back in the Hollywood mix after playing Marcus Pierce on Lucifer.

Season 3 of Supergirl ended with the departure of two series regulars, Chris Wood and Jeremy Jordon, although Jordon is expected to occasionally reappear in later episodes of the new season. That wasn’t the only recent casting shake-up either. Jesse Rath, who stars as Brainiac 5, has been bumped up to series regular. The announcement of Witwer joining the cast of Supergirl comes right on the eve of San Diego Comic-Con 2018. With the Supergirl panel taking place Saturday, July 21, there are sure to be more exciting updates and announcements on the upcoming season 4 very soon.
