The heisting adventures of Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf, and Chains continue in Payday 3, a 2023 release by Starbreeze and Koch Media’s newest publishing label, Prime Matter. This will be a full decade after the release of Payday 2, a game that has received updates on and off since its launch in August 2013. Featuring a cast that includes many original characters, Keanu Reeves reprising his role as John Wick, and even popular Internet creators Ethan and Hila Klein, the Payday games have presented a sprawling narrative via in-game events and live action trailers, and all signs indicate a continuation of that with the new game in development.

The road to Payday 3 has been a bumpy one for Starbreeze and the internal Overkill Software studio. First announced in 2016, Payday 3 was initially set to run on the Valhalla engine, a full engine that Starbreeze bought for millions of dollars. After years of work, the team shifted production to the more familiar Unreal Engine, but faced more setbacks with failed game launches and legal trouble for the company’s higher-ups. Production restarted around 2020, and Starbreeze teamed with the Embracer Group in early 2021 to publish the game when it’s complete. That has led to Payday 3’s re-reveal as part of a slate of upcoming titles from a new publisher today.

Players got a brief tease of the world of Payday 3 during the Summer Game Fest unveiling of Prime Matter, a new publishing label under Koch Media and the Embracer Group. Joined by the revival of the Painkiller series, an RTS set in the world of Crossfire, and a host of smaller games set in brand-new worlds, Payday 3 is one of Prime Matter’s biggest games out of the gate. The company describes Payday’s environment as “Hollywood-like,” inviting players to join the Payday Gang as a career criminal in a next-gen version of the beloved co-op FPS.

Players who can’t wait years to experience Payday 3 will be happy to know that Starbreeze are continuing support for Payday 2 in the form of additional downloadable heists and weapons. Considering that narrative is very important to fans of the franchise, it’s almost certain that the story from Payday 2 will roll over in some fashion to 2023’s sequel. The most recent releases include several weapon packs from in-game smuggler Jiu Feng and a mission that sends players to Chinatown to take on the deadly Golden Dagger Triad. The current Legacy version of the game comes with a stack of previously premium content at no extra charge, giving those who’ve never slipped on a clown mask plenty to go through before the sequel emerges.

The Payday games are a product of a very specific moment in the history of PC gaming, and it will be interesting to see if Payday 3 can replicate that success on consoles. The sequel in particular thrived thanks in part due to its in-game storytelling and its player inventories full of guns and other items they could sell on Steam’s marketplace. It took a lot from Valve’s own Team Fortress 2, and that worldbuilding has developed a core group of players that won’t abandon the franchise even when the updates stop coming. Can a full-on current-gen sequel keep itself down-to-Earth enough to keep those fans hooked, or will they try for the perfect crime and trade them in for a shot at an even more mainstream success?
