There are so many TV shows about or involving zombies that it could almost become a genre in and of itself. Indeed, zombie TV shows are, at the least, a sub-genre of dramas, thrillers, post-apocalyptic shows, and even sometimes comedies. The concept of zombies – undead former humans roaming around with the singular mission of finding human flesh to feast on – has been approached from every angle imaginable.

Zombie movies are in abundance, but it’s really the best zombie TV shows that allow for a compelling story to be told in a unique way over a longer period of time.

10 Daybreak (2019) – Available On Netflix – 6.7

With a comedic angle to the zombie apocalypse, Daybreak is about a 17-year-old high school outcast named Josh. Following an apocalyptic event in California, he goes searching for his British girlfriend.

Daybreak is chock full of pop culture references. As he commences his journey, Josh meets an eclectic group of helpers along the way, including a 10-year-old pyromaniac and a former bully. Together, they must fight enemies they encounter, among them are adults who have turned into zombies they call Ghoulies.

9 Z Nation (2014 – 2018) – Available On Netflix – 6.7

Airing on Syfy for five seasons and now streaming on Netflix, Z Nation begins when three years have already passed since the zombie apocalypse. Most humans are dead, but Murphy is one of three prison inmates who underwent an experimental program conducted by the government. Each inmate was given a different vaccine and Murphy is the only one to have survived.

Not only that, but he appears to be immune to zombie bites and can even put some of them into a trance and control them. This puts Murphy in a unique position to save humanity from being wiped from existence. However, there’s one problem: Murphy is slowly turning into a human zombie hybrid-like creature. The story continues as Murphy and a small group of survivors who have joined him on his journey try to find a cure before it’s too late.

8 Helix (2014 – 2015) – Available On Tubi – 6.8

It only lasted two seasons, but Syfy’s Helix was well-reviewed by fans. A viral outbreak has two results in humans who have been exposed: in one, it’s fatal and they instantly die. In the other, they become zombie-like creatures who are violent, dangerous, and out for blood.

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) scientists try to figure out what is going on and how to stop it, they discover that there might be a cure. And so, the story continues as the scientists try to control the spread, while also learning what caused the outbreak in the first place.

7 Fear The Walking Dead (2015 – ) – Available On Hulu – 6.9

The first spin-off series to The Walking Dead, AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead follows a different cast of characters doing their best to survive in other parts of the U.S., starting pre-outbreak in the first season. Beginning in Los Angeles, the show moves around throughout Mexico, Texas, Virginia, and other locations. The fact that the show continually refreshes its main cast, including some of the best characters introduced after season one of Fear the Walking Dead, helps breathe new life into it each season.

Like the original, the biggest enemies the main characters face through each season are mortal ones. But the undead zombies are an ongoing threat and recurring theme in every episode.

6 Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021) – Available On Netflix – 7.2

The newest show on the list, Netflix is home to this horror drama and limited series that is based on the book of the same name written by Todd Grimson. Lisa is a young woman who travels to Los Angeles in the hopes of finally being able to direct her first movie.

But when she partners up with the wrong person, she finds herself caught in a nightmare of a situation that involves not only zombies but also hitmen, supernatural kittens, and a tattoo artist with the power to curse people. Zombies are only one part of the larger theme of Brand New Cherry Flavor, joined by an interesting mix of others.

5 Santa Clarita Diet (2017 – 2019) – Available On Netflix – 7.8

Streaming on Netflix, Santa Clarita Diet only lasted three seasons, but it managed to make the list thanks to its compelling storyline and A-list cast that included Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant.

The movie actors played Joel and Sheila, a happily married couple who work in real estate but find their lives changed forever when Sheila starts to demonstrate symptoms of being a zombie. She has a strange craving to consume human flesh, and her personality is slowly changing, making her more impulsive than she was before. It’s an interesting spin on the typical zombie genre that combines elements of horror with comedy.

4 iZombie (2015 – 2019) – Available On Netflix – 7.8

In this CW supernatural procedural crime drama, which is a loose adaptation of the Chris Roberson and Michael Allred DC comic book series of the same name, Olivia “Liv” Moore is a medical examiner who became a zombie. This, however, doesn’t stop her work with the police department. Instead, she eats victims’ brains, which helps her temporarily inherit their memories and personalities so she can provide details to help police solve the cases.

It sounds gruesome, but iZombie is, ironically, a humanizing story about an undead character who finds a way to feed her carnal desire that can actually help others, instead of killing innocent people to sustain her voracious appetite. While there are some things that only make sense in iZombie for those who read the comics, it’s still an entertaining watch for any fan of the sub-genre.

3 The Walking Dead (2010 – 2022) – Available On Netflix – 8.2

The longest-running series on the list, AMC’s The Walking Dead begins at the onset of the zombie apocalypse. Humans who have died “turn” shortly after, becoming mindless, roaming “Walkers,” as they’re called on the series (several other names have also been used, though never zombies). As the initial lead character Rick Grimes learns early on, everyone is infected and will turn when they die, not just those who have been bitten.

Every season follows the main group on their journey of day-to-day survival, joining others, trying to build communities, and escaping enemies who are more commonly other humans and not the Walkers themselves. In terms of clever, unique zombies of all kinds, from bloated Well-Walkers to ones burned to a crisp, this show has explored every zombie type one could imagine.

2 Kingdom (2019 – ) – Available On Peacock – 8.4

Hailing from South Korea and available in North America through Peacock, Kingdom is a political period horror thriller set in a fictional, medieval-inspired time during the Joseon period. At the heart is a crown prince who investigates what is going on in his community when a plague seems to take over, causing humans to become infected and turn into zombies.

The show gets great ratings from both IMDb as well as review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes, which gave its first season a 93 percent approval rating. In addition to the 12 episodes over two seasons, there’s also a special feature-length episode called Kingdom: Ashin of the North, which focuses on the supporting character of that name. Kingdom remains one of the highest-rated K-dramas from 2019 and 2020, according to IMDb, as well.

1 Ash Vs Evil Dead (2015 – 2018) – Available On Starz – 8.4

Fans were devastated when this revival of the original Evil Dead trilogy by Sam Raimi was canceled after three seasons on Starz. Even so, Ash Vs Evil Dead remains the top-rated zombie show among IMDb voters.

Bruce Campbell returned to reprise his role as Ash Williams in the show, which approached the topic as a sequel. Now living alone and dealing with life day by day, Ash finds himself having to be the hero once again when the Evil Dead returns and humanity needs to be saved.
