Persona 5 Strikers is an upcoming title from SEGA and Atlus and acts as a direct sequel to the original Persona 5. Screen Rant was given a first look at the upcoming title, which sees the Phantom Thieves of Hearts back at it again reclaiming the desires of those in need, but this time they will have to leave the city of Tokyo on a road trip around Japan. While the cast of colorful characters will be familiar to those who played Persona 5 or P5R, Persona 5 Strikers ditches the classic turn-based combat for a more chaotic Dynasty Warriors-style of gameplay.

Persona 5 was originally released in 2016 for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 forming a cult fanbase that has fallen in love with the game’s characters and art style. Luckily, all eight of the original Phantom Thieves will be returning in Persona 5 Strikers as well as the game’s highly stylized graphics. There will also be a few new characters that interject themselves into Persona 5 Striker’s storyline, including a new member of the Phantom Thieves.

Persona 5 Strikers will also be the first Persona title that takes place in multiple cities. While the original Persona 5 allowed players to explore various hotspots around Tokyo, the Phantom Thieves will be heading on a road trip around Japan visiting many cities to help those in need. However, traveling outside of Tokyo isn’t the biggest change that Persona 5 Strikers has to offer.

All of the main Persona titles are known for the series’ iconic turn-based fighting style. In Persona 5, players would sneak around different Metaverses, choosing whether or not to encounter enemies called Shadows. After encountering Shadows, players would enter into turn-based combat where they take turns selecting actions from a list of commands. Persona 5 Strikers ditches the old combat in exchange for hack-n-slash gameplay. Persona 5 Striker’s combat resembles that of Dynasty Warriors where players freely control their character and fight large hordes of enemies. There is still plenty of sneaking involved when traversing landscapes, but players don’t have to be as strategic when it comes to battling grunts.

In addition to a change in combat, players can now harness the full power of each member of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. This means that, while players will start the storyline playing as Joker, they will also be able to switch between their other team members later on. Players can also customize their teams of up to four with any of the Phantom Thieves making for some creative combos. Players will not, however, be able to collect Personas like in Persona 5 – but they can utilize the abilities of all of the characters’ original Personas.

While Persona 5 Strikers is a sequel, Atlus made it clear that players won’t have to have played Persona 5 to understand or enjoy Strikers. Players who have completed Persona 5 will have a greater understanding of Strikers’ world, but Persona 5 Strikers’ storyline follows a completely separate incident unrelated to the story of the first title. This allows for players on PC and Nintendo Switch, for instance, to enjoy Persona 5 Strikers without the fear of feeling lost or confused.

Persona 5 Strikers looks just as good as – if not better than – the original Persona 5. It drops the restrictive nature of turn-based combat and allows players to take control of some of their favorite characters from the original. It also presents a large world for players to explore while also allowing players to rediscover familiar environments from the original release. For fans of Persona 5, Strikers is the title they have been waiting for, and for those restricted by the original’s console exclusivity, now is the time to delve into the world of Persona 5 all the same.
