The world of Pokémon is full of different characters and personalities, from the trainers to the Pokémon themselves, but sometimes it pays to disguise as someone or something else. Various characters in the Pokémon anime don disguises in order to protect their real identity, whether it’s for criminal means, having an alter ego, or just wanting to enjoy life in a different way for a moment.

In Pokémon X & Y, Serena dresses up as Ash and takes his place in battle when he falls ill with a fever. Although she fools her opponent Jimmy with accurate mannerisms and callouts to Pikachu, the impression is not without its flaws. There are several other characters who are able to disguise their true selves and intentions almost seamlessly.

9 Blaine Confuses Ash With Riddles & A Disguise

When Ash and friends arrive at Cinnabar Island in “Riddle Me This,” they are met by a welcoming man who offers them a place to stay if they can solve his riddles. The man eventually turns out to be Blaine in disguise, ripping off his wig and the rest of his ensemble.

Using logic from the rest of Pokémon, Ash and friends wouldn’t have known what Blaine looked like anyway, diminishing the need for the disguise, but it still allowed him to test the trainers with his riddles before the ultimate reveal. He also adapts his voice to fit the disguise, completing the alter ego of the Big Riddle Inn owner.

8 The Phantom Thief Brodie Is A Master Of Disguise

Brodie, also known as Phantom Thief Brodie, is a member of Team Magma with a particular gift of disguising himself as other people. He passes as a Weather Institute scientist named Millie, fooling Team Aqua and the Weather Institute.

Brodie later appears to wreak havoc by stealing the Ribbon Cup, the intended prize for the winner of the Hoenn Grand Festival. He assumes disguises as multiple trainers — including Officer Jenny. He has Ditto as his main partner in crime, which aptly matches his talent for disguises.

7 Professor Kukui Struggles To Juggle His Responsibilities As The Masked Royal

Pokémon Sun & Moon changed up the formula for the Pokémon anime, not just with the general layout of episodes and the number of Ash’s travel companions, but also by having the region’s Pokémon Professor become a more prominent character than those from previous generations. A teacher at the Pokémon School, Professor Kukui oversees most of the school’s trips and excursions.

Despite his calm and assertive demeanor, he manages to hide and maintain his secret alter ego as the Masked Royal from everyone for a long time. While audiences see the reveal much earlier, Ash and friends find out when Ash is set to face the Masked Royal in an exhibition match after his Manalo Conference victory. Kukui’s mask doesn’t even cover his entire face, but his change in voice as the Battle Royal wrestler is enough to fool everybody.

6 Princess Salvia Poses As Dawn For A Day

In the Diamond & Pearl series of the Pokémon anime, Ash and friends meet a doppelganger of Dawn named Princess Salvia. Princess Salvia’s royal obligations prevent her from her dream of being a traveling Pokémon Coordinator. Seeing an opportunity in her likeness to Dawn, she asks if they can swap places for the Arrowroot Contest.

Passing as Dawn, Princess Salvia uses her Togekiss to emerge victorious, although she gives up the Ribbon to Jesselina instead of keeping it for herself. As thanks for helping her realize her dreams for a day, Salvia gives Dawn her Togekiss so that it can enjoy many more Pokémon Contests down the road.

5 Mimikyu Is Literally The Disguise Pokémon

Introduced in Gen VII, Mimikyu is a master of disguise; it is literally known as the Disguise Pokémon. The dual Ghost-Fairy type has a small body that it keeps hidden under an old rag made to look like Pikachu.

Mimikyi’s ability is also known as Disguise, which allows it to take a direct physical hit without taking damage. This helps the pokémon in the anime: the ability allows Mimikyi to take an Iron Tail from Pikachu before launching a counterattack of its own.

4 Kalos Queen Aria Can Avoid Unwanted Attention With Her Ariana Persona

Aria is introduced in Pokémon X & Y as the reigning Kalos Queen and a rival to Serena. Initially earning fame as a star of Pokévision videos, Aria chose to become a Pokémon Performer. She earned multiple victories and won the Master Class tournament, eventually achieving the title of Queen.

When Aria wants to escape from the press and her fans, she dons a pair of glasses and goes by the name Ariana. The disguise works even though it is not elaborate. Aria even battles Serena in a Double Battle without Serena realizing her true identity until much later.

3 Duplica Loves To Perform With Her Imitation Tricks

Duplica is introduced in the original Pokémon anime during Ash’s Kanto adventures. Duplica is a Ditto trainer who loves to perform and transform her appearance like her Pokémon. Her Ditto even defeats Ash’s Bulbasaur in a brief battle.

Duplica disguises herself as a Nurse Joy in “Imitation Confrontation,” which is only noticed by Brock’s intuition when it comes to women. Duplica’s imitation acts are often ruined by her Ditto companions; the pokémon have quirks that prevent perfect transformation — an aspect Duplica learns to embrace and incorporate into her future performances.

2 Meyer Also Runs As Blaziken Mask

Before Professor Kukui and his alter ego of the Masked Royal in the Pokémon Sun & Moon series, another character had already played a similar role. In Pokémon X & Y, Meyer is actually the hero known as Blaziken Mask; he saves Ash from a deadly fall in the second episode.

Blaziken Mask got his name from not only his mask but also his prized Mega Blaziken. Meyer chooses to hide his secret identity and protect his family from a distance — but he inadvertently reveals the truth during the fight against Team Flare.

1 Team Rocket Has Excelled At Disguising Themselves For Years

The Team Rocket trio of Jessie, James, and Meowth have been in about as many episodes of the Pokémon anime as Ash Ketchum and Pikachu. The devious group are persistent and will stop at nothing to impress their boss and snag as many Pokémon as they can — but Ash’s Pikachu is the main objective.

Team Rocket’s schemes always start off well; they flawlessly hide their true identities almost every single time, allowing them to steal their targets. While Team Rocket’s disguises are stellar, their getaways could use some work.
