Introduced in Dead Man’s Chest and returned in At World’s End, Davy Jones remains one of the most iconic villains in film history. This is due to the brilliant acting talent of Bill Nighy, the character’s unforgettable design, and the CGI that still holds up over so many years later. Davy Jones is also known for having so many great quotable lines.

10 “My heart will always belong to you.”

Though Davy Jones is a monster of the franchise, he was once a good man. This is best shown when he has one last reunion with his love Calypso, the woman that caused him to tear out his own heart. Their entire conversation is nice and brings more subtle and softer dialogue from Davy Jones.

His final words to Calypso come when she asks him: “and what of your fate… Davy Jones?” Davy responds softly with, “My heart will always belong to you.” Davy fades away while Calypso smiles, showing genuine love between the two characters.

9 “Did you forget? I’m a heartless wretch!”

During the final battle on the Black Pearl and Flying Dutchman inside the maelstrom, Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner and Davy Jones have a confrontation. Will attempts to stab Davy through the back and succeeds, but he fails to kill the cursed captain, who responds with, “Missed! Did you forget? I’m a heartless wretch!”

He uses his crustacean claw hand to bend the blade, keeping Will from being able to withdraw the sword. It causes Davy Jones to laugh as Will makes Davy bounce and wiggle on the blade, providing some levity during such an epic battle.

8 “Ha! You afraid to get wet?”

At the beginning of the final battle in At World’s End, Davy Jones is unphased by the maelstrom, whereas Mercer is quick to object and call Jones mad. Davy Jones is quick to rebuttal by going right into his face with, “Ha! You afraid to get wet?”

Not only showing more of that humorous side that Bill Nighy has perfected, but also that Davy Jones is a ruthless being who is willing to do anything, no matter how dangerous or monstrous. He even kills Mercer by suffocating him with his beard of tentacles.

7 “We who ready to wake… the Kraken!”

Every good villain needs a proper monologue to show that they mean business. Davy Jones gets one when Will Turner escapes to another ship, sending Jones on a path to claim his lost prize. To spite Will’s father Bootstrap Bill, he forces him to watch as the crew begins to summon the Kraken.

Davy Jones, naturally, gives a speech: “Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look up at the sky with hope! And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake… the Kraken!” Bill Nighy’s delivery, the imagery of the crew using the summoning tool, and the horrorific music lead to this being one of the standout scenes from Dead Man’s Chest.

6 “Life is cruel…”

Hinting at the hardships that Davy Jones suffered in life, this quote comes after asking another iconic line to a seaman who declines. Jones has his neck cut open then thrown back into the sea as another seaman calls out “cold-blooded!”

Davy Jones simply looks at the man and says “life is cruel…” He continues to put out his pipe on his claw hand, adding “why should the afterlife be any different?” In this act, he subjects others to pain and suffering to make up for his own.

5 “I am the sea.”

After the Kraken destroys Will’s rescue boat, he avoids being spotted, thus leading to a Flying Dutchman mutant reporting: “The boy’s not here, he must have been claimed by the sea.” Of course, Davy Jones is no fool and likely suspects that Will is still alive somewhere, so he responds with, “I am the sea.”

That doesn’t stop him from putting salt on Bootstrap Bill’s wound by saying “you need time alone with your thoughts. Brig!” Sending him away before survivors are presented to him. Finally, in a line that even Emperor Palpatine would be proud of, he states that “there are no survivors,” which leads to their execution.

4 “Do you fear death?”

The first-ever line of dialogue the world ever heard from Davy Jones as he approaches survivors of a ship he’s destroyed is “do you fear that dark abyss? All your deeds lay bare, all your sins punished. I can offer you… an escape.” He’s cold, dark, and yet filled with charisma that it’s impossible to not get sucked in by this line.

This line became the main catchphrase for Davy Jones across both movies. He says it multiple times to several characters, including Commodore James Norrington.

3 “And are you prepared for what comes after?”

Technically, this is cheating, as it is from a deleted scene—but it is a famous deleted scene. It shows Governor Swann attempting to stab the heart of Davy Jones, thinking Elizabeth is dead. He’s stopped by Norrington, but Jones tempts him to do it before Swann says, “Stay back! I’ll kill you!”

“And are you prepared for what comes after? When I cut that traitorous vessel from my body, I cast upon it a terrible geis. If you stab my heart, yours must take its place. The crew is not bound to me. They are bound to the Dutchman! And the Dutchman must have a captain… will ye serve?” Even in just a motion-capture suit and tracking dots, Bill Nighy proves to be a masterclass actor. This scene also better explains the curse of the heart, so many fans agree that it should have been left in the movie.

2 “I’ll take that as a no.”

When Norrington finally betrays Davy Jones and Beckett to help Elizabeth, it comes at the cost of his life. Before he dies, Davy Jones asks his iconic catchphrase yet again, asking “James Norrington, do you fear death?” Norrington stabs Jones with the sword made by Will Turner to no avail.

Norrington succumbs to his wounds and passes away, leaving Jones to smugly say, “I’ll take that as a no.” Only the best of villains can shrug off being impaled by a sword. To make things even better, Jones removes the sword and commends Will’s craftsmanship, much as everyone else does.

It’s always great when Jack gets the upper hand on the villains. Even after he dies by the Kraken, Jack still manages to win when Davy Jones opens the Dead Man’s Chest to check on his own heart. Of course, Jack was sneaky and got the heart away, leading to Davy Jones discovering an empty chest.

In pure rage, Davy Jones spits out the words, screaming to the skies, “Damn you, Jack Sparrow!” Bill Nighy once again nails it, as it could have been a cheesy scream, but, instead, it’s just satisfying to see Jones lose to Jack.
