Centered in the town of Mystic Falls, The Vampire Diaries is an absorbing teen drama filled with supernatural adventure. At first, Mystic Falls seems to be a lifeless average town, until two vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon, pass by. What follows next is a love triangle between the two brothers and Elena Gilbert, a high school student orphaned after both parents got involved in a car crash.

The trio is the center of all the captivating drama that unfolds, as the viewers are introduced to the astounding world of paranormal creatures such as vampires, witches, werewolves, and hybrids. With most Mystic Falls’ residents oblivious of the imminent danger lurking around them, Elena and her vampire friends always save the day. Every episode is another adrenaline-charged session for viewers as they watch the vampire action. Despite the series having a cultic fan base for 171 episodes, there are still many unanswered questions about vampires.

10 Special Vampires

Throughout the show, vampires appear to have the same qualities and powers. Some of their gifts and abilities include compelling humans, possessing blood that can heal, immortality, and turning off their human emotions. Damon, however, seems to have special powers that other vampires do not have.

They include commanding crows and creating fog. Damon’s powers make viewers wonder why he is the only one who possesses them. His origin story does not also indicate anything out-of-this-world that could have given him special abilities. So, do some vampires have additional gifts and abilities?

9 Blood Sharing

In season four of The Vampire Diaries, Elena is now a vampire but is unable to feed on blood. No matter how hard she tries, she cannot keep the blood down. That is when Damon allows her to feed on his blood. When Stefan learns that Elena had drunk from his brother, he gets furious. Unbeknownst to Elena, she shared a very intimate experience with Damon.

Blood sharing for vampires equals the exchange of body fluids or rather having sexual intercourse. However, blood sharing is never seen again in the series. If blood sharing is such an intimate act for vampires, why do Elena and Stefan, Elena, and Damon or even other vampire couples not share the experience in the following episodes? Would they not want to share the highest level of intimacy?

8 How Much Blood Do Vampires Take?

The show has countless scenes of vampires sucking blood from their victims. The time it takes to drain blood from the victims brings a question to the amount of blood vampires drink. For example, a significant character such as Matt seems to have a constant blood supply when sucked by Damon. Minor characters, on the other hand, get their blood sucked within seconds.

7 Invitation

In the initial episodes of the show, vampires are unable to enter other people’s houses without an invitation. In later episodes, however, the rule is not followed. Without invitation, Damon enters the house of a woman letting vampires stay at her home. For that reason, does the rule of invitation still apply to vampires?

6 Vervain Tolerance

Aside from the sun and werewolf venom, Vervain is the single thing that threatens vampire existence. Touching or ingesting the rare plant inhibits vampires’ ability to compel humans, weakening them in unimaginable proportions. Vervain also burns the skin of vampires. Nonetheless, as seen in The Vampire Diaries, taking small amounts of Vervain over time can increase vampires’ tolerance to it.

Katherine, for example, was able to increase her resistance to Vervain, ultimately developing immunity. As the show goes on, however, Katherine’s vulnerability to the poisonous plant is in no way lesser than that of other vampires. Does that mean that vampires were mistaken to think that they could develop tolerance to Vervain by taking it in small daily doses?

5 The Sunlight Effect

Without Daylight rings, vampires burst into flames when exposed to sunlight. When watching The Vampire Diaries, the question that comes up is why some vampires disintegrate faster than others when sunlight hits them. Some vampires are seen catching fire almost instantaneously after exposure to sunlight. The main cast vampires, however, take on the sun for extended periods without bursting into flames. This puzzle has never been resolved in the show.

4 Age and Strength

According to the series, the strength of a vampire increases with age. Yet, in multiple instances, younger vampires are seen defeating older ones without much difficulty. An example is when Caroline defeats Damon, a vampire of more than 170 years when rescuing her father. Therefore, does vampire strength really increase with age?

3 Silas The Original

When the Originals were first introduced to The Vampire Diaries, they were described as the oldest, most powerful, and fastest. They were the original vampires, the “first of their bloodline.” The originals consisted of the Mikaelson family.

Nonetheless, the fourth season introduces Silas, an ancient witch committed to destroying the Mikaelsons. Silas consumed the immortality portion a thousand years before the Originals, making him the first immortal. Does that mean that the Originals are not the real Originals?

2 White Oak Tree

When Esther turned her offspring, the Originals, into vampires, she called upon the White Oak Tree. The White Oak Tree and the Originals’ immortality were, thus, intertwined. When the tree was burned down by a fire, the Originals remained alive. Why would they stay alive when the tree that was tied to their life was no more? Should they not have died at the same time the tree?

1 The Cure

One of the most exciting twists of The Vampire Diaries was the cure. The fact that a vampire can be turned into a powerless human increase the aesthetic value of the show. However, the fluctuating rules of the cure confuse the viewer. The first storyline behind the cure is that a vampire has to take the potion to lose their immortality.

If other vampires want their bloodlust cured, they have to drain all the blood from the individual who took the potion. In another instance, when Elena has the cure in her bloodstream, Bonnie withdraws some of it and injects it into Stefan. Stefan ends up losing his powers. The inconsistencies behind the cure leave the viewers wondering how exactly the cure should be used to cure vampirism.
