In the role that catapulted her to superstardom, Keira Knightley hunted buried treasure, sailed the high seas, and spent a lot of time screaming at pirates. As Elizabeth Swann, first introduced in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, she portrayed a British aristocrat living in Port Royal, Jamaica in the 1700s, whose heart belonged to humble blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). Her only opinion of pirates was contempt, until she got swept up in the adventures of the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

Elizabeth went from being a damsel in distress in the first movie, to becoming the Pirate King by the third film Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Her relationship with Will went from puppy love, to tumultuous fling, to husband and wife. But Will wasn’t the only man who turned Elizabeth’s head, and she could have had her choice of suitors. Here are 10 characters Elizabeth should have been with (other than Will).

10 JAMES NORRINGTON

Her betrothed in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, James Norrington was an ideal life partner. He had a distinguished career in the British Navy (recently promoted to Commodore), and deeply cared for Elizabeth despite his inability to properly express his emotions.

After losing both Elizabeth and his commission in the second film he made some poor life choices, but being a true villain wasn’t in his nature. He proved to be steadfast, valorous, and with honor until his final breath, when he died ensuring that Elizabeth escaped The Flying Dutchman.

9 JACK SPARROW

In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Elizabeth Swann and Jack Sparrow enjoyed a flirtation in Will Turner’s absence aboard the Flying Dutchman. It was unclear whether or not they truly cared for one another, or were simply using each other for emotional manipulation.

Despite his unorthodox lifestyle and scheming machinations, Jack Sparrow wasn’t completely devoid of principles. He offered a more exciting and dangerous life than anything Elizabeth had ever known, and they definitely had chemistry.

8 HECTOR BARBOSSA

Once a comrade in arms to Jack Sparrow turned villainous undead captain of the Black Pearl in the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, Captain Hector Barbossa appeared in the remaining films as an ally and begrudging friend.

Elizabeth Swann was Barbossa’s captive for much of the first film, but as a gentleman pirate, he was a gracious host. He could be more brutal than Jack Sparrow, but he was also less self-centered, and seemed to take the pirate code (mostly) seriously.

7 DAVY JONES

Though he was known to be the fiery and tempestuous captain of the Flying Dutchman, Davy Jones was not devoid of tender emotions. He pined for Calypso, the goddess of the sea who charged him with ferrying souls to the netherworld. But her betrayal of their love drove him to imprison her in a human body and carve out his own heart.

Davy Jones could be equal parts dictatorial tyrant and guilt-ridden romantic as he dragged seamen down to the depths of The Locker. Had Elizabeth Swann offered her heart to him, she might have been able to save both Turner men from indentured servitude aboard the Flying Dutchman.

6 CUTLER BECKETT

Intent on filling in the “blank spaces” on every nautical chart he found, Lord Cutler Beckett of the East India Trading Company desired nothing more than to bring law and order to the Seven Seas. He did this by replacing Commodore Norrington at Port Royal in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest as the ubiquitous joy killer in every pirate’s life.

As meticulous as he was manipulative in his pursuit of exterminating every maritime outlaw, Cutler Beckett was a man of refinement, known for having high tea on the deck of his ship before battle. His machinations achieved results, and had circumstances been different Elizabeth could have been betrothed to him.

5 CAPTAIN SAO FENG

A legendary Chinese pirate and known through the South China Sea as the Pirate Lord of Singapore, Captain Sao Feng made his grand entrance in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and attempted to romance Elizabeth Swann during their first meeting.

Though their initial encounter in the bath houses of Singapore was a bit combustible, Sao Feng eventually gave Miss Swann and her companions the necessary navigational charts they required to reach the gathering of other pirate lords. And when Elizabeth became the Pirate King, she even outranked him.

4 BLACKBEARD (EDWARD TEACH)

First appearing in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Edward Teach (also known as the dreaded Black Beard) was infamous for pillaging the ports of the Caribbean with his beard set aflame by matches and wearing bracers with six pistols.

Though an intimidating figure in pirate lore, Blackbeard could be charming and even gracious when it suited him. Aboard The Queen Anne’s Revenge Miss Swann would have been afforded every luxury unless she tried his patience.

3 TIA DALMA

The mysterious enchantress first featured in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest may have seemed alarming to Elizabeth Swann at first, but her playful and flirtatious personality (as well as the promise of getting Jack Sparrow back) soon put her mind at ease.

Tia Dalma was known to have dalliances with plenty of prominent seafaring men, from Davy Jones to Jack Sparrow, but her mischievous manner indicated she wasn’t exclusive when it came to matters of the heart. Besides, her true form was Calypso, goddess of the sea, who loved whomever she deemed worthy.

2 JOSHAMEE GIBBS

Of all the pirates that Elizabeth Swann consorted with in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Joshamee Gibbs was one of the most reliable and trustworthy. First mate to Captain Jack Sparrow once he regained The Black Pearl, Gibbs proved that he was more than just a scalawag.

While he may have been more avuncular to her than the other pirates, he was as protective of her as Will Turner, with as much swagger as Jack Sparrow, even if he did feel it was bad luck having a woman aboard a ship.

1 PHILIP SWIFT

Though he began Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as a steadfast missionary, his crusades took him afoul of the dreaded pirate Blackbeard. He helped him find the Fountain of Youth, and fell in love with a mermaid named Syrena.

Though Elizabeth Swann was married to Will Turner at the time of the film, he was busy aboard the Flying Dutchman filling in for Davy Jones. Both Elizabeth and Philip had penchant for romantic affairs with supernatural entities, so perhaps they had more in common in other ways.
