The now-classic Toy Story was the first full-length feature film to be released by Pixar and the first entirely computer-animated feature film. The technology alone drew audiences to theaters in November of 1995, but the story has made it a fan favorite, even after all these years.

To this day, Toy Story has some of the best moments of any Pixar film. It’s a film that makes us laugh just as hard as it makes us cry, and it’s a film viewers everywhere seem to have a very special bond with and one we love to revisit year after year, because the magic never really fades.

10 Funny: Buzz’s First Impression Of Andy’s Room

The film opens with Andy’s eighth birthday party. Andy is excited, but his toys are very, very nervous. Birthdays and Christmas seem to be the hardest times for toys because they know that new toys are about to be given to their child and they could potentially be replaced. Buzz Lightyear is one of Andy’s gifts at his party. When Buzz first meets the other toys, he radios Star Command and gives us one of our favorite funny lines in the film, “There seems to be no signs of intelligent life anywhere.”

9 Sad: Buzz Learns He Can’t Fly

For a majority of this film, Buzz really thinks he is the Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger. He doesn’t realize that he’s a toy like Woody and all of the others. It’s not until Buzz sees a commercial for himself on television in Sid’s house that he is forced to come to terms with his reality.

The words “Not A Flying Toy” appear on the screen and Buzz looks defeated as Randy Newman comes in with the song, “I Go Sailing No More” and we all turn into puddles, feeling Buzz’s pain and sadness in that moment.

8 Funny: The Claw

On their crazy adventure, Woody and Buzz find themselves at Pizza Planet, a restaurant and arcade full of games and prizes. One of those games is the classic stuffed animal machine where someone has to direct a large silver claw over a prize and hope the claw picks it up. In this world, that machine is filled with little, three-eyed, green aliens, all of whom seem to be worshipping the claw and hoping to be chose by it. When Buzz and Woody enter the atmosphere they instruct them to look up, hysterically exclaiming in unison, “The claaaaawwwwww!”

7 Sad: Sid Uses The Claw

What starts out as a very funny bit quickly turns heartbreaking when Sid, the evil kid next door, decides to put a quarter in the machine and win a prize. Sid doesn’t have a very good reputation with toys and his idea of “playing” is more sinister and cruel to the toys he’s playing with.

Woody knows this so when he spots Sid and sees that he has captured Buzz in the claw, Woody latches onto Buzz, knowing that the only way to protect him is to go home with Sid too.

6 Funny: Mr. Shark’s Impression

At one in the film, Woody winds up in the toy box in Andy’s room with a bunch of different toys. Woody doesn’t live in the toy box, his place is right next to Andy at night and on Andy’s bed, easily accessible during the day. After a period of time in the toy box, Woody opens the box and reveals that his hat is missing, but it doesn’t take long for it to be found. Mr. Shark, a rubber squeaky Shark toy, pops up wearing Woody’s hat and exclaiming, “Look! I’m Woody! Howdy, howdy, howdy”.

5 Sad: The Toys Ditch Woody

Pixars Toy Story 5 Of The Funniest Moments (& 5 Of The Saddest)

The bad news is, Woody and Buzz are at Sid’s house and it’s starting to look grim. The good news is Sid lives right next door to Andy, so Buzz and Woody are close to being home, if they can just get the attention of the other toys, so they can help. Woody does manage to wave down Andy’s other toys and they start to help him, but the circle of trust has been broken and Andy’s toys aren’t sure Woody deserves saving.

A series of confusing and unfortunate events leads to the toys deciding not to help Woody, leaving him abandoned with Buzz in Sid’s evil lair.

4 Funny: The Army Men

Pixars Toy Story 5 Of The Funniest Moments (& 5 Of The Saddest)

Andy has a collection of those green plastic army men that were a staple for a lot of boys growing up. When these guys come to life and crawl out of their bucket, hilarity ensues. They take their job very seriously, which just makes every scene they’re in even funnier. During Andy’s birthday party, these men are in charge of monitoring the present opening and reporting back to Andy’s bedroom with every present that’s unwrapped. These men can not and will not fail, but they will definitely make you laugh.

3 Sad: Woody Pushes Buzz Out Of The Window

Pixars Toy Story 5 Of The Funniest Moments (& 5 Of The Saddest)

It’s important to note here that Woody pushing Buzz out of Andy’s bedroom window really was an accident. Yes, Woody wanted Buzz out of Andy’s eye-line so that Andy would choose Buzz and not Woody to go to Pizza Planet, but Woody was just trying to push Buzz behind the desk, not out the window and down two flights onto the grass below. The other toys don’t see it this way, and Buzz certainly doesn’t see it this way, and this one mistake is the catalyst for how this entire story unravels.

2 Funny: Mr. Potato Head Needs To Shave

Pixars Toy Story 5 Of The Funniest Moments (& 5 Of The Saddest)

The puns and the wit in the first film of the Toy Story franchise don’t not go unnoticed. Part of the appeal of these movies and many other Pixar films is how they speak to not only kids, but adults as well. There’s something for everyone to laugh at in these movies, like for instance, when Mr. Potato Head finds out on Christmas Eve that Andy’s sister Molly has gotten a Mrs. Potato Head, and he excitedly exclaims, “Gee, I better shave!”, and proceeds to take his mustache off and toss it aside.

1 Sad: Woody’s Speech To Buzz

By the end of the movie, Woody is defeated. He’s tried asking for help from his friends and he’s tried saving Buzz, but nothing seems to be working. Buzz is feeling just as down as he is strapped to a rocket that will be lit in a few short hours. Woody has a heart to heart with Buzz. He tells Buzz that he’s way cooler than Woody will ever be and admits that’s why he’s been so mean to Buzz from the start. At this realization, Woody tells Buzz, “I’m the one who should be strapped to that rocket.” And it breaks our hearts.
