As a general rule, companies don’t avoid mentioning a product’s price because of how cheap it’s going to be, so many people have been worried about how the much-anticipated PS5 reveal kinda sidestepped the issue of how much the console will end up costing. However, while the cynical fan might believe that the next-gen console’s price went unmentioned simply to avoid the ridicule that came from the PS3’s infamous $599 announcement, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan has another explanation — and it’s one that makes a lot of sense given the state of literally everything in the world right now.
Yes, it turns out that the infernal COVID-19 continues to exist, despite the fact that we managed to stop talking about it for 5 minutes. The virus’s disruption of international markets is still kind of a thing, and it makes manufacturing something as complicated as a brand new console a bit… volatile.
“Conventional wisdom and history show that our business is one of the more recession-proof businesses,” Ryan told BBC regarding PlayStation’s response to the current economic climate. “But I think this will sharpen our need to ensure that we focus on getting the value equation right.”
Part of this “value equation” comes in the form of two different versions of the console: the regular PS5, and the disk-drive-free “Digital Edition.” Ryan was quick to point out that he won’t be revealing anything about the pricing of either version of the console, but he said that offering customers a choice was a key element to PlayStation’s decision to create both versions.
“You’re not going to hear anything on price today,” said Ryan “But many of our many of our consumers are purchasing solely digitally these days. We thought that we would do what we typically try and do, and just offer choice.”
