Within the realms of Pokémon, in both the anime and the games, it’s generally expected that Pokémon will use moves that represent their own typing. However, this is not always the case, with Normal-type moves being accessible to nearly every species of Pokémon.

One of the most effective and notable of these Normal-type moves is Body Slam. With the user bringing down its weight on its opponent in an attempt to crush them and inflict serious damage, Body Slam is more than capable of ending a battle quickly. The results may vary, depending on which Pokémon is using it. For example, larger and heavier Pokémon might dish out more damage than others.

10 For Such A Small & Unassuming Pokémon, Slugma’s Body Slam Was Actually Quite Powerful

Despite being a small slug, Slugma has been seen on numerous occasions in the anime using Body Slam. It is arguably a move better suited for its evolved form of Magcargo, but they both turn to the move when their special Fire attacks are not enough. Body Slam serves as a good physical attack option in Slugma and Magcargo’s move pool.

Natasha’s successful use of Body Slam in a double battle against Ash proves that the size of the Pokémon doesn’t necessarily matter if they have sufficient momentum to increase their damage output. In “Some Like It Hot,” a trainer named Egan also faces the wrath of a Magcargo and its Body Slam.

9 Misty’s Poliwhirl Used Its Size To Squash Ash’s Bulbasaur

In “The Totodile Duel,” Ash and Misty were bickering over who threw the Poké Ball that caught a wild Totodile, so Brock suggested that they battle for it. During this battle, Misty’s Poliwag evolved into Poliwhirl, who Body Slammed Ash’s Bulbasaur and dealt substantial damage.

Poliwhirl is much larger in bulk and weight than its pre-evolution, Poliwag, meaning that Body Slam does a lot more damage in its new form. Body Slam attempts are often dodged or predicted in the anime, but Poliwhirl’s execution of the powerful Normal-type move on Bulbasaur showed off Body Slam in all its glory.

8 Drake’s Dragonite Was Dominant By Making Use Of Ten Different Devastating Moves, Including Body Slam

One of Ash’s first huge victories came during his Orange Islands adventures when he faced the previously undefeated Orange League Champion, Drake. Drake had a decent team, but his best Pokémon was his Dragonite, which would just tear through any challenger’s team.

During their battle, Dragonite pulled off ten different moves while facing Ash’s team, with Body Slam being one of them. However, Body Slam never truly registered its desired effect and damage, as Ash had his Tauros brace itself and essentially absorb the momentum and power.

7 Meganium’s Body Slam Was Destructive When It Connected

Throughout the entire anime series, there are a handful of Meganium trainers that have the large Pokémon use Body Slam, with varying degrees of effectiveness. The drawback of the move is shown on a number of occasions, with it being relatively easy to avoid if the user is slow in its execution.

Ash’s Bulbasaur manages to evade Jackson’s Meganium’s Body Slam attempts, and Pikachu similarly avoids Oliver’s Meganium’s attempts in Pokémon Journeys. In Pokémon Chronicles, however, Casey’s Meganium is able to deliver a devastating Body Slam when fighting Team Rocket alongside Misty, showing that the Herb Pokémon is more than capable of hitting the move and causing considerable damage.

6 Ash’s Torkoal Packed A Serious Punch With Its Body Slam

Torkoal is often regarded as one of Ash’s weakest Pokémon of all time when considering its potential and its actual performances in the anime. While it tried to throw its weight around on multiple occasions, it wasn’t until Ash’s second bout against Brandon at the Battle Frontier that it used the move in creative ways.

Going up against Brandon’s Registeel, a Normal-type move such as Body Slam would usually have little to no effect on a Steel-type, but Torkoal used it first to paralyze and immobilize its opponent before strengthening the move and chipping away at Registeel. Torkoal lost in the end, but it was one of its best performances of the entire anime.

5 Lt Surge’s Raichu Relied Solely On Power Over Speed Which Was Its Undoing

Lt Surge and his Raichu easily swept Ash aside in their first bout without Raichu having to use more than three different moves: Mega Punch, Mega Kick, and Thunder Shock.

In the rematch, Raichu demonstrated its pure physical strength by flattening Pikachu with a Body Slam. However, Surge got greedy with another Body Slam, which Pikachu dodged. This exposed Raichu’s slow pace as its weakness and ultimately led to Pikachu gaining the upper hand and winning.

4 Ash’s Muk Showed Off A Deadly Body Slam In The Indigo League

Ash didn’t use Muk all too often in the anime, but he was undoubtedly thankful that it debuted when it did. It was Ash’s third and final Pokémon in his fourth-round preliminary match against Jeanette Fisher at the Indigo League. Muk came in to face off against a Bellsprout that had somehow humiliated and defeated Ash’s Pikachu and Bulbasaur.

Muk, however, made it look easy, absorbing Bellsprout’s Razor Leaf before smothering it with a huge Body Slam for the win. This powerful Body Slam should have been utilized more often and could have turned Muk into a more useful and important Pokémon for Ash.

3 Katie’s Walrein Was A Destructive Force

Ash’s 6-on-6 battle against Katie during the Ever Grande Conference was one of the most intriguing battles that Ash has ever had at the Pokémon League. Katie used clever strategies and moves to chip away at Ash’s team so that her powerful Walrein could finish them off.

Walrein was able to use the water to deliver alarmingly quick strikes before retreating. Ash’s spirited Corphish was an unfortunate victim of Walrein’s Body Slam, powered by its bulky body.

2 Ash’s Bayleef Wasn’t Huge, But It Still Dished Out Significant Damage With Its Body Slam

Bayleef was undoubtedly one of Ash’s best Grass-types in the anime, and it certainly helped him through plenty of tough battles in the Johto region. Mainly known for its Grass-type offense from its time as a Chikorita with Razor Leaf and Vine Whip, Bayleef improved greatly to the point where it could use a devastating Body Slam.

Bayleef used Body Slam to wipe out Gym Leader Chuck’s Poliwrath and Machoke, and the Normal-type move also came in handy when facing Harrison’s Houndoom at the Silver Conference. Bayleef wasn’t the largest Pokémon, but it still made excellent use of the powerful move.

1 Snorlax’s Size & Weight Made Its Body Slam Even More Devastating

Ash’s Snorlax utilized its weight perfectly in battle with excellent application of its moves. While its Body Slam was often a reliable source for victory, Snorlax’s best moment came when it used a Hyper Beam to propel itself upward, using the momentum and speed to deliver a devastating Body Slam. This strategy was used at the Battle Arena of the Battle Frontier against Greta, and it helped Ash secure a well-deserved victory.

Snorlax learned a number of impressive moves over its many adventures with Ash, but none of the other moves were as good at finishing a battle as Body Slam.
