The Pokémon series has evolved into one of the most successful franchises to strike any form of media, and there’s no end in sight as the adorable and addictive series continues to dominate. Each new entry in the Pokémon series adds more stories, environments, and creative creatures into the mix, yet there are some Pokémon that garner more attention than others. The allure of Legendary Pokémon has been present since the very first games in the series, but these rarer breeds of creatures have been able to expand in unexpected ways.

Each set of Legendary Pokémon have their own fans, but the Lake Guardian Trio–Azelf, Uxie, and Mesprit–from Generation IV’s Sinnoh region are especially remarkable. The Lake Guardians serve an important role in Pokémon, but this doesn’t mean that life is easy for them.

10 They’re Confined To The Sinnoh Region’s Lakes

One of the grand perks of Pokémon is that each new generation introduces sprawling new regions to explore, which can also contain new and elusive breeds of Pokémon. Pokémon may be most comfortable in certain climates, or even specific regions, but there’s so much that can be learned from travel and being exposed to different areas and the full scope of what the Pokémon world has to offer. Unfortunately, the Lake Guardians’ perception of the world is dramatically compromised. The Lake Guardians need to spend their time in the Sinnoh region’s Great Lakes, Lake Verity, Lake Acuity, and Lake Valor.

9 They Were Created By Arceus To Be Its Tools

There are some truly powerful Pokémon that have entered the canon over time, some of which predate humanity or transcend time and space. Many new Pokémon have been discovered after Generation IV, but the Sinnoh region also brings forward a very important Legendary Pokémon, Arceus, the God of all Pokémon. Arceus is given unprecedented importance, but he’s also responsible for the creation of all Pokémon, especially Sinnoh’s other Legendary creations. This means that the Lake Guardians can be viewed as an extension of Arceus and lack some individuality.

8 They’re Overshadowed By Gen IV’s Creation Trio

The prospect of Legendary Pokémon has grown more cumbersome in each new generation of games. The earlier Pokémon games are fairly selective with their number of Legendaries, but it seems as if now the common trend is to introduce multiple sets of Legendaries. This results in some Pokémon getting prioritized over others.

If the Lake Guardian trio were the only Legendaries out of Generation IV, they’d be a lot more popular. However, they need to share the spotlight with the Creation Trio of Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina, who are more momentous in every regard.

7 They’re Popular Targets For Team Galactic

A sad reality that any wild Pokémon needs to accept is that they’re a potential target for Team Rocket or any of the other determined Pokémon poachers who are out there. This danger becomes exponentially higher for Legendary Pokémon, but it makes the Legendary Lake Guardians particularly vulnerable. Team Galactic, a more robust revision of the Pokémon terrorist group, becomes obsessed with capturing all three Lake Guardians. Fortunately, Ash, Dawn, and Brock are able to protect the trio from Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars, but the Legendaries still need to worry about capture and attack.

6 They Can Rob Individuals Of Emotions

There are lots of Legendary and Mythical Pokémon that have desirable stats for battle, but they also have amazing effects on the natural world around them, which some attempt to manipulate for nefarious purposes. Each of the Lake Guardians is imbued with unique energy, and Mesprit of Lake Verity is intrinsically connected to the emotions that give humanity meaning. Mesprit can actually be quite a dangerous tool since the Pokémon can sap emotion from humans and leave them as void husks, or redistribute emotions in unfair ways.

5 They’re Responsible For Keeping The Creation Trio Calm

Pokémon has been able to work as well as it has because its creatures typically have the freedom to work with their trainers and explore their world’s many luxuries. The Lake Guardian trio are often featured in contrast to the Creation trio, who share space with them in the Sinnoh region.

Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are very volatile Pokémon that can throw the world into ruin, and it’s actually Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie that are in charge with keeping the Creation trio satiated. Without this safeguard, the world could fall apart, and the burden falls on the Lake Guardians.

4 If Uxie Is Seen, It Can Erase People’s Memories

Each member of the Lake Guardian trio serves their own purpose, and Uxie of Lake Acuity is viewed as the bringer of knowledge to the Pokémon world. Knowledge is vital, and this makes Uxie a very valuable tool, despite the Pokémon’s typically serene attitude. Uxie has the ability to completely wipe the memories of humans and Pokémon, which has serious consequences when in the wrong hands. Uxie doesn’t like to abuse this power, but its mere existence is dangerous and allows this sage creature to be turned into a weapon against its will.

3 Their Union Can Create A Whole New Universe

Pokémon 10 Harsh Realities Of Being A Lake Guardian

There is an important collection of Pokémon that are powerful on their own but are suddenly capable of unbelievable things when they’re together with the right combination of creatures. Anyone who encounters just one of the three Lake Guardians is entitled to serious bragging rights, but assembling the whole trio can trigger a major cataclysm. Team Galactic’s entire agenda with the Lake Guardians is to use them to create a whole new universe that’s made in the evil organization’s image. This is another major liability wherein these Pokémon put the entire world in jeopardy.

2 They Can’t Join A Pokémon Trainer’s Party And Enjoy Domesticated Perks

Pokémon 10 Harsh Realities Of Being A Lake Guardian

Pokémon have a lot of perks to appreciate in the wild, but some creatures don’t fully come into their own until after they’re captured by a trainer and are able to properly bond as a member of someone else’s party. It’s technically possible for the Lake Guardians to be captured, but they play such important roles in Sinnoh’s ecosystem that it’s understood that they need to remain by their posts. It’s a noble decision, but one that ostensibly means that the Lake Guardians can’t experience “normal” lives as Pokémon where they travel, battle, and bond with their trainer’s other Pokémon.

1 They Can Be Used To Rid People Of Willpower

Determination and willpower are essential skills in the Pokémon universe, and many trainers like Ash would never even head out on their quests if they weren’t properly inspired in the first place. The Lake Guardians’ Azelf is also known as the bringer of willpower, and the Pokémon has a special hold over the ambition that fuels humanity. Much like with Mesprit and Uxie, this is simply too much power for Azelf to wield. There are already enough expectations that surround this trio of Pokémon that Azelf shouldn’t also have to worry about being used to rob the world of ambition.
