Kamehameha has been Son Goku’s signature attack ever since some of the earliest chapters of Dragon Ball, but it was not something that he could always perform. Goku first learned the technique in Chapter 15 of Dragon Ball when he witnessed Master Roshi use the Kamehameha to put out a massive fire (and accidentally destroy an entire castle) a few pages prior. In an act that defied Roshi’s claim that it would take 50 years to learn the technique, Goku managed to muster up a respectable Kamehameha on his first try.

Much like the fantastical martial artists of Dragon Ball, most Pokémon from the titular anime and video game series can accomplish some similarly impressive shows of power and skill. Some of their attacks can even rival or entirely counter the Kamehameha itself.

10 Pikachu’s Volt Tackle Pushed Back A Luster Purge Beam

Volt Tackle might look similar to the unimpressive move Quick Attack at first, but Episode 189 of Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl showed exactly how this move was used by Ash’s Pikachu with an offensive force strong enough to push back the energy beam of a Latios’ Luster Purge. Volt Tackle even seemed to give the user somewhat of an electric shield with enough resilience to deflect some damage as well.

With how similar Latios’ beam looked and functioned like a typical Kamehameha from Dragon Ball, it isn’t too hard to see how Pikachu’s Volt Tackle might have been able to similarly deflect a Kamehameha and give Pikachu an opening for at least one good hit on its opponent.

9 Primal Groudon’s Solar Beam Had Massive Power

Solar Beam is a powerful move that can be used in battle by many Pokémon, from tiny Bellsprouts to a massive Venasaur. When Primal Groudon appeared in Pokémon: Mega Evolution Special III though, its Solar Beams were not portrayed as something that a human or Pokémon could just walk away from. Primal Groudon was treated and portrayed as a Godzilla-Level threat by those who were following it.

A Solar Beam from a weak Pokémon might not counter the Kamehameha, but the Solar Beam fired from Primal Groudon would completely obliterate the beam, the person who fired it, and probably the ground they were standing on too.

8 Mirror Move Could Send The Kamehameha Right Back

Mirror Move allows the user to copy the opponent’s last attack, and it can only be learned by bird Pokémon. Mirror Move has been used creatively throughout the Pokémon anime’s duration, with a notable occasion being the time Ash’s Rowlett had its Tackle attack copied by the opposing Oricorio in Episode 8 of Pokémon: Sun and Moon. When the Oricorio attempted to use Mirror Move to copy Rowlett’s Tackle a second time, Rowlett itself used Mirror Move on Oricorio’s Mirror Move, which finally allowed Rowlett’s Tackle to hit the mark.

A quick fighting type Pokémon like Blaziken could easily make the most of copying the Kamehameha with Mirror Move just in time to stop the opponent’s beam in its tracks, and maybe even come out of the battle victorious.

7 A Precise Focus Blast Would Have A Good Shot

Focus Blast was notably featured in many episodes of Pokémon: Black and White as one of Ash’s Scrafty’s most powerful attacks. Unfortunately, power did not equate to effectiveness because Scrafty was terrible at aiming it. In its most disappointing appearance, Scrafty shot six Focus Blasts at a stationary Throh who stared straight ahead, unfazed, as each Focus Blast careened off into the distance.

With its high power, a Focus Blast could easily counter the Kamehameha, but whether it will actually hit the opponent’s beam would be entirely up to chance. With Scraggy’s track record, those chances would be quite low.

6 Protect Or Detect Make The User Invincible For A Turn

Protect and Detect are Pokémon attacks that offer the user a turn of invincibility. These types of moves would not only be a great temporary counter against the Kamehameha, but would also be a fitting move to use in the universe of Dragon Ball.

There have been many times over the course of Dragon Ball’s history when Goku or his friends were moments away from destruction but were able to buy some time for another character to arrive from afar, wait for an ally to step out of the Time Chamber, or wait for someone’s Spirit Bomb to charge. Dragon Ball’s fighters aren’t necessarily known for their cowardice, but they would all appreciate a move like Protect to stall for time and live to fight another day.

5 Spore, Sing, Or Hypnosis Would Prevent The Opponent From Ever Attacking

Rather than trying to defend against the Kamehameha or overwhelm it with power, a Pokémon’s best strategy against a Kamehameha user might be to avoid the fight altogether by putting the enemy to sleep.

When it comes to the Kamehameha specifically, attacks like Hypnosis might be especially great options because the Kamehameha user would have to charge up the attack by chanting “Kamehameha” beforehand. It would be a short window, but it might be enough time for a Pokémon like Hypno or Jigglypuff to put its opponent to sleep and get away before the opponent ever even wakes up.

4 Hyper Beam Is The Pokémon World’s Own Kamehameha

Hyper Beam is a move that can be learned by a wide variety of Pokémon and packs a ton of destructive force. The Hyper Beam strongly resembles a Kamehameha in both form and function, so it should be no surprise that the two moves would counter each other.

An interesting aspect of the Hyper Beam is that it is often fired from the attacker’s mouth but has been shown being loosed from a Krabby’s claw and a Snorlax’s eyes. The unclear rules of how to shoot a Hyper Beam are strikingly similar to the abstract rules of the Kamehameha. The Kamehameha is typically known to be produced by two hands but has been fired with one hand by Gohan, and there was even a fight against Piccolo Jr. where Goku was forced to fire a Kamehameha using his feet.

3 You Might Get Lucky With Metronome

It’s not that this attack will always counter the Kamehameha, but it might counter it, and that is what is important. The best-case scenario is that Metronome grants the user a powerful attack like Fleur Cannon, or at least something like Endure, that will allow the user to withstand the force of the Kamehameha.

At worst, Metronome might force the user to use Magikarp’s signature move, Splash.

2 Lucario’s Aura Sphere Functions In The Same Way

Aura Sphere might be the most fitting attack in this entire list because it is not difficult to imagine a Lucario using it in Dragon Ball’s version of Earth against any other superpowered fighter. Lucario are able to sense auras just as Krillin and Gohan sensed the ki of strong warriors to survive on planet Namek. Lucario’s signature attack, the Aura Sphere, is produced by a Pokémon harnessing their aura in sphere form and propelling it forward in nearly the exact same fashion as Master Roshi uses the Kamehameha.

Interestingly, Goku and Lucario happen to share an English voice actor in some Pokémon media. Sean Schemmel has been voice acting for Son Goku in America for over 20 years and also provided the voice of Lucario in Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

1 A Few Pokémon Could Transform Into Their Dragon Ball Attacker

Transform is the signature move of Ditto but can also be learned by Mew and even a Smeargle through a bit of extra effort. It is a move that allows the user to morph into the opponent and copy four of their attacks until the battle is over.

If a Ditto were to transform into Goku, for instance, the Ditto would gain access to techniques like Instant Transmission, Spirit Bomb, Destructo Disk, and even the Kamehameha itself. At that point, the transformed Ditto would have more than enough power to counter any attack from Goku, and might even be able to defeat him.
