Nurse Joy has been a (sort of) recurring character throughout the Pokémon series. Instead of being a single character, there are actually a ton of Nurse Joys— and they are all related, as Joy is not their first name, but their family name. They are all practically identical, though their outfits and hair can vary depending on the Pokémon region.

Due to their iconic and easily recognizable look, Nurse Joys are a popular cosplay choice. Whether you are a veteran who played Pokémon Yellow or a new kid who just got into the anime, Nurse Joys are always around. Do not be fooled by the fact that most Nurse Joys are identical though— cosplayers have ways to make themselves unique and stand out of the crowd.

10 Holding A Pokéball

Cosplayed by MasyFox and photographed by CosplayLive, this Nurse Joy cosplayer stuck to the quintessential example of a Nurse Joy. She has the nurse hat, the pink dress, the pink hair in loop braids, and the white apron.

What does set her apart from other Nurse Joy cosplays is the dress shape, though. Her upper chest is not covered, which gives the cosplay more of a pin-up style.

9 With Officer Jenny

Officer Jenny is a lot like Nurse Joy. She is a tad more obscure though, as she does not play as much of a role as Joy in the video games. Like Joys, Jennys are all related and are largely identical. Instead of nurses, though, they work as police officers. They have bigger roles in the anime, as they often play a part in dealing with Team Rocket.

8 With Meowth Plush

This cosplay, done by Marissa at Daisho Con in 2016, utilizes a Pokémon plush. A ton of Pokémon cosplayers actually use plushies as a way to include actual Pokémon with their outfit. For example, those who cosplay as Ash from the anime often get a plush Pikachu to carry around.

The photo of this cosplayer, taken by Arctic Revolution Studios, really gives off a different feeling than other Nurse Joy cosplay photos. Most are quite bright while this one gives off neon lights in the dark. The cosplayer also as a septum piercing, making this Nurse Joy have a bit of a cool punk edge.

7 Sitting Outside

This photo looks like it could have a story, like maybe the Jigglypuff and Pichu are long time patients and Nurse Joy is trying to get them to walk for the first time since they were in a terrible accident.

6 With Wigglytuff

This version of Nurse Joy, cosplayed by Itakichan, is particularly from the X and Y series. The Nurse Joys of Kalos have hair loops that are like a horizontal figure eight. They also don’t have the bangs like the Joys of Kanto, and have their bangs a little more grown out and brushed to the side.

The picture was taken by Okamigan. The star of the picture isn’t just Nurse Joy though, as there is also a Wigglytuff nurse. Nurse Joys often have the assistance of certain Pokémon.

5 With Chansey

While Pokémon plushies are easy enough to buy online or at toy stores, this cosplayer went the extra mile. Not only did she make her Nurse Joy cosplay herself, but she made the Pokémon she is holding as well. Chansey are among the most common Pokémon helpers to Nurse Joys because of their healing abilities and gentle personalities.

4 Nurse Joey

Some of the best cosplays are created by breaking gender stereotypes. While all Nurse Joys in the games and show are women, some cosplayers dress as “Nurse Joey,” which is basically the fan-given name of male Nurse Joys. He also comes with two Pokémon assistants Audino and Snorlax. VenTsun did this cosplay, and the photograph was taken by Ryuusei Photography.

3 Silent Hill Nurse Joy

Here is the height of cosplay creativity. It is a crossover idea between the horror games series, Silent Hill, and Pokémon. Nurses are a recurring monster of Silent Hill. Besides Pyramid Head, they are one of the most well-known creatures of the franchise. The only thing they may actually have in common with Nurse Joy is their uniforms. The cosplay was done by Tamlin-Haven.

2 With Brock

Anyone who watches the show knows the fact that Brock loves any and all Nurse Joys that he meets. He is a flirt and does not know how to leave them alone until Misty drags him away by the ear, or one of his own Pokémon beat him up.

This Brock, cosplayed by lazyeight, actually is quite a unique cosplay. His eyes are closed to show off the thick dark line make-up that simulates how Brock actually looks in the show. The cosplayer for Nurse Joy is jaRoukaSama.

1 Sitting

This Nurse Joy, cosplayed by nadyasonika, is posed and in a photograph that looks as though it belongs in a Pokémon magazine. The Pokéball on the countertop by her side my look familiar. While come cosplayers make their own Pokéballs, others have them as bought merchandise.

The Pokéball in this photo might be from when Burger King gave out Pokéballs with golden Pokémon cards in them with their kids meals. It is recognizable from its shine as well as its flattened bottom.
