As the first companion to join Ash on his journey to become a Pokémon Master, Misty has a place in many fan’s hearts as a favorite character. She has even returned multiple times throughout the series to see how Ash is faring without her and Brock to hold his hand through life, with the most recent being in the Pokémon Sun & Moon anime.

One common aspect of Misty’s character, particularly in the earlier seasons, is that she has a quick temper and becomes easily annoyed – sometimes with good reason – at the shenanigans she is gotten into by Ash and Pikachu. Unfortunately, this also means Misty has done some terrible things on the show that often get overlooked by fans who only want to see the best in her.

10 Psyduck Abuse

A constant source of annoyance for Misty is her Psyduck, who never seems to be able to do what she wants him to. There are many times in the series when Misty physically abuses her Psyduck, along with many more times where she insults or degrades him for being so stupid.

As a so-called Water-type Pokémon master, Misty should have a better grasp of how to handle one of the most common Water-type Pokémon in her native region. She should also know how to properly train Psyduck so they can work better together. Short of this, Misty should also know that she can just release it back into the wild at any time, as she has no obligation to keep Psyduck on her team aside from it being a Water-type.

9 The Golduck Episode

With a great deal of Pysduck abuse under her belt, there is one episode in the Orange Island series titled “Bye Bye Psyduck,” where Misty believes that her Psyduck has finally evolved into a Golduck, consequently mastering its psychic abilities. This proved to be false, as the Golduck was simply wild and liked to show off its skills to anyone willing to watch it.

The worst thing about this episode, however, is Misty’s contrasting treatment of the Golduck and her Psyduck. She shows Golduck nothing but affection while it was with her and quickly goes back to abusing her Psyduck when it finally comes out of its Pokéball.

8 Forging Love Letters

During one of the later Orange Island episodes, Ash, Brock, and Misty meet two Nidoran who are in love, though their trainers both apparently hate each other. Wanting to make sure the Nidoran are able to be together, Misty forges love letters between the two trainers to try and get them to spend more time with one another.

Although Misty’s plan backfired horribly, the two trainers eventually put their problems with one another aside and their Pokémon were able to evolve as a result. Misty may have had good intentions, but she nearly made the two Nidoran be separated permanently because she couldn’t stay out of other people’s business.

7 Her Bike Grudge

Misty’s main reason for sticking by Ash for so long, at least according to what she says to the protagonist himself, is that she will follow him until he repays her for the bike he destroyed during the opening episodes. The bike in question was wrecked when Ash, desperate to get Pikachu to a Pokémon Centre as he had been severely injured by a lightning bolt, borrowed it from Misty before she could refuse.

It was only because of this that Ash’s Pikachu survived the first few episodes. It was a bit petty of Misty to still be hung up on such a small thing when someone’s life was in danger.

6 She Stole Togepi

In “Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon,” the same episode where Ash’s Charmeleon evolves into Charizard so it can battle an Aerodactyl, the group discovers a mysterious egg that later hatches into Togepi. As this was a baby Pokémon, Brock thought, fairly correctly, that he was the best suited to take care of it, while Ash simply wanted to add it to his team. Therefore, the group took part in a Pokémon tournament to decide who would take it.

Misty and Meowth also competed, though they were both knocked out fairly early. Despite Ash being the clear winner, Misty still took Togepi for herself, as it had apparently imprinted on her when it hatched.

5 Replaced Togepi

Togepi was one of Misty’s longest-serving members of her team, even if she didn’t realize it until much later in the series. Consequently, when Togepi evolved to help protect its kind from poachers, their goodbyes at the end of the episode were heart-wrenching.

However, Misty didn’t stay broken-hearted for too long, as the role of baby Pokémon that she carries around with her was quickly filled by an Azuril she received from Tracey.

4 She Eats Fish

Throughout the series, Misty makes a point of constantly saying how much she loves Water-type Pokémon, even claiming otherwise ugly creatures such as Tentacruel to be some of the most beautiful Pokémon she has ever seen. It seems she doesn’t feel this way about every Water-type, however, as she has no issue with eating these Pokémon.

It has been a long-running issue in the Pokémon series that characters are seen multiple times eating some sort of animal despite the fact that the world is almost exclusively populated by Pokémon. While not confirmed, those tasty snacks are most likely made of potential battle partners.

3 Left The Cerulean Gym

As one of the many Gym Leaders of Cerulean City, it’s understandable that she doesn’t need to be present at all times for Pokémon battles, as she has three other sisters who can fill the role of Gym Leader while she is away.

However, Misty only decides to go back to her duties when her sisters decide they have had enough of doing Misty’s dirty work for her, and decide to go on a holiday. It says something about the quality of Gym Leader Misty is when the only reason that she goes back to the gym she is supposed to lead is when she has no other choice.

2 Against Brock Finding Love

Brock can come on a little strong when it comes to the women he meets, which is usually played off for comedy. However, it does make one wonder if he might have actually found someone to spend his life with if Misty wasn’t around to constantly stop his advances.

Although Brock eventually does hook up with Professor Ivy, it is a short-lived relationship and he quickly goes back to hanging out with Ash when they apparently break up.

1 Physically Abuses Ash

Misty’s early abuse of Psyduck is well known among the fanbase. She also does seem to find love for her once hated partner in the Sun & Moon anime, where she shows off the results of their hard work to Ash and his new companions.

Something that does get overlooked from time to time is Misty physically hitting Ash on multiple occasions. Misty has a long-running history of having a short fuse, and she seems to think Ash is the perfect outlet for her anger for a very long time.
