Pokémon 10 Best Battles In Journeys (So Far)

Pokémon Journeys is a much different season that breaks from the usual formula of the Pokémon anime. Now that Ash has conquered a Pokémon League, he strives to take his quest to become a Pokémon Master one step further alongside his new friend Goh, who wants to catch every Pokémon in the world.

Seeing the two travel to many different parts of the Pokémon world has brought viewers new adventures to see, new Pokémon to be caught, and of course, plenty of battles to be had. While this journey isn’t close to done yet, there are quite a few fantastic battles that deserve to be mentioned.

10 Ash & Goh Vs. Golurk In Colossus Ruins

Ash and Goh travel to the Unova Region to explore the “Colossus Ruins,” and there they find the ruins’ namesake is actually a giant Golurk. Teaming up in a Raid Battle against the Golurk, Ash and Goh work together to bring the giant to its knees.

This is the first Raid Battle Ash and Goh team up for, and it’s against a pretty tough opponent too. There are also some pretty good highlights, as Ash gives his Dragonite time to shine alongside Goh’s Darmanitan, and the two manage to put in some impressive teamwork that wins the day.

9 Ash Vs. Visquez At The Vermillion City Gym

In an effort to increase his Trainer Rank, Ash decides to battle Vermilion City’s Gym again, though it seems Lt. Surge is out training this time around and has left the Gym in the care of his substitute, Visquez. Remembering Ash from when Surge battled him, Visquez is more than happy to accept the challenge.

Ash uses Pikachu and his newly caught Gengar against Visquez’s Raichu and Electrode for this battle, and for a large portion of it, they’re pretty neck and neck. But thanks to some quick timing and good defense on Pikachu’s part, Ash wins against the substitute Gym Leader. This one’s a pretty electrifying battle with a few good callbacks to Ash’s battle with Surge from way back.

8 Goh Vs. Zapdos The Legendary Bird

Since Goh’s more focused on catching Pokémon, he doesn’t get as many chances to do battles the way Ash does. That doesn’t mean Goh can’t put up a good fight though, and his battle against the Legendary Bird Zapdos is proof of it. Continuing his goal to catch every Pokémon, Goh sets his sights on Zapdos and fights it in a Raid Battle.

Using his Raboot and Flygon, Goh manages to land some decent hits on the legendary in a battle that really puts Goh’s skills to the test. Sadly, Goh’s Pokémon eventually become too exhausted to continue the fight, and he’s unable to catch Zapdos. Their battle though was still quite the spectacle.

7 Ash Vs. Hodge In The Flute Cup

Traveling to the Hoenn Region to battle in the Flute Cup, Ash meets a tough-looking trainer named Hodge who’s looking to win this thing too. The two manage to make it all the way to the end and face off in the finals for a pretty amazing battle.

While Pikachu’s fight with Hodge’s Mightyena is pretty sweet, the real MVP of this battle is Mimey (Mr. Mime) who Ash adds to his team and manages to use to his strengths with a series of barriers before going in for the knockout against Hodge’s Hariyama.

6 Ash Vs. Bea Rematch

At this point, Ash can battle with the best of them, but that doesn’t mean he never loses. After a devastating loss against Galar’s Fighting-type master, Bea, Ash is raring to go for a rematch for a chance to recover his World Coronation Series rank.

In this two-on-two battle, Bea proves that Ash hasn’t been the only one getting stronger since their last match, and while Ash manages to score the first knockout, Bea’s Grapploct manages to keep Pikachu and Riolu on the ropes for most of the match. The fight between Riolu and Grapploct itself is an intense high-energy brawl that ends in a draw, proving that Bea and Ash’s rivalry is far from over.

5 Raihan Vs. Leon In A Heated Battle Between Two Rivals

Even in the Pokémon anime, the Dragon-type Gym Leader Raihan is gunning for Leon’s top spot as the champ. While he’s pumped on the idea of finally breaking his losing streak, Leon of course is prepared to send Raihan packing once again.

In their one-on-one battle, with Raihan’s Duraludon versus Leon’s Charizard, Raihan opens with a good offense but Leon’s Charizard tanks all that punishment. The battle reaches its climax once the two Gigantamax their Pokémon, and Charizard is able to burn through Duraludon’s attacks like a hot knife through butter.

4 Ash Vs. Korrina In The Kalos Battle Festival

While competing in the “Battle Festival” for the World Coronation Series in the Kalos Region, Ash meets up with Korrina again and the two are ready for another battle against each other. Despite having the type advantage, Ash’s Gengar and Dragonite have an intense battle with Korrina’s Mienshao and Lucario.

With Gengar out of the fight pretty early, it’s up to Dragonite to win this one, which is no easy feat considering all the hits Dragonite takes. Despite that and a pretty fierce showdown against Korrina’s Mega Evolved Lucario, Dragonite manages to pull through, winning the match and getting Ash into the Great Class rankings.

3 Ash Vs. Leon (First Match)

After watching Leon in battle, Ash yearns for the chance to battle the Monarch. Fortunately, Leon is more than happy to oblige Ash’s challenge and the two have themselves a sparring match outside of the World Coronation Series. Each sends out their signature Pokémon, making it a battle between Pikachu and Charizard.

The battle starts off pretty evenly matched, both Pokémon going blow-for-blow, but the heat is cranked up high once they get their Pokémon to Gigantamax. Though inexperienced with Gigantamaxing at this point, Ash and Pikachu are still able to put up a good fight, but Leon and Charizard prove to be more than they can handle. This battle sets the stage for Ash competing in the World Coronation Series and won’t be the last time he battles with Leon.

2 Lance Vs. Leon In A Battle Between Two Champions

They say first impressions are always important, and Leon certainly knows how to make an entrance. In his first appearance in the anime, Leon goes head-to-head with one of Kanto’s Elite Four, Lance. While most would think that Lance’s Gyarados would have this battle in the bag, Leon proves that this match was anything but.

Despite having the type advantage, Leon’s Charizard came prepared and manages to unleash a flurry of moves while avoiding Gyarados’ attacks. After making both their Pokémon giant, the match gets a lot closer, but Leon still manages to score an epic win, proving that he’s more than a match for members of the Elite Four.

1 Ash & Goh Vs. The Legendary Eternatus

With things going haywire and looking pretty dire thanks to Eternatus being released, Ash and Goh are now the only ones able to stop the rampaging Pokémon. Of course, that’s easier said than done and most of their attempts to land a hit on the fearsome beast end up not doing much.

Thankfully all hope is not lost, as the legendary sword and shield Pokémon, Zacian and Zamazenta, swoop in to fight alongside the two trainers. Empowered by their relics, Zacian and Zamazenta help Ash and Goh defeat Eternatus, and the two end up catching it together.
