Pokemon 10 Things You Didnt Know About Gym Leader Maylene

One of the biggest mysteries in Pokemon is the criteria for becoming a Gym Leader, and Maylene of Veilstone City seems to have no insight on what that is. Whereas Fantina mentions she became Gym Leader by studying Pokemon, Maylene says that she has no idea how she even became Leader in the first place and is utterly confused.

As someone who doesn’t know her own strength, Maylene is an interesting character whose story was largely expanded in Pokemon Platinum. Appearing as a cute girl on the outside, Maylene’s inner power is respected throughout the Sinnoh region. The Fighting-type specialist gives out the Cobble Badge to Trainers who defeat her, as well as the TM for Drain Punch.

10 Maylene Shares A Voice Actor With Jessie

Like all NPCs in the core series games, Maylene does not get voice lines in her main appearances. In the Pokemon anime, she is voiced in the English dub by Rachael Lillis, the original voice of both Misty and Jessie. Her role as Maylene marked her return to the anime after TAJ Productions took over the dubbing responsibilities from 4Kids, and made her the first major 4Kids cast member to return to the show. Lillis also voices Jigglypuff across most of its appearances.

In Pokemon Masters, Maylene is voiced by Erica Lindbeck, who is known for her roles as Futaba Sakura in Persona 5, Blaze the Cat in the Sonic franchise, and Celica in the Fire Emblem series.

9 Maylene Didn’t Go Outside

In her initial appearance in Diamond & Pearl, Maylene was the only Sinnoh Gym Leader that did not appear outside of her Gym at least once, standing in one spot for the entire duration of the game.

Thankfully this was rectified in Platinum, where she makes multiple appearances, albeit in strange places. You can encounter her on Route 217, one of the snowiest areas in the entire region, where she is walking barefoot to Snowpoint City. She mentions later at the Battleground that she believes walking barefoot is healthier, since that’s what Pokemon do.

8 Maylene Trains With Other Gym Leaders

Though she was stuck inside Veilstone Gym for Diamond & Pearl, Platinum also gave Maylene more relationships with other Gym Leaders. Once the player reaches Snowpoint City, Maylene reveals that she came to the city to train with Gym Leader Candice, as the Ice-type matches up poorly against the Fighting-type.

At the player’s villa in the post-game, she will also ask Candice what strength means, to which Candice responds that they should ask Gardenia. Earlier, Crasher Wake is seen exiting Maylene’s Gym singing his theme song. He mentions that he tried to train with Maylene but was stunned by how tough she was, not revealing whether or not he had bested her in battle.

7 Maylene Has A Cameo In Kanto

Although Maylene briefly mentions her appetite after being defeated in the Sinnoh games, it isn’t until Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver that players get to see her metabolism in action. After defeating the Indigo League for the first time and gaining access to Kanto, Maylene can be found in a restaurant in Celadon City.

Here, she sits in front of a large stack of bowls, having entered some kind of eating contest. The other NPCs in the restaurant are amazed by how much she can eat, as the other participants aren’t even close to catching up with her.

6 Maylene’s Interesting Name Origins (& Confusion)

The name Maylene appears to be a portmanteau of the words melee, a close-range combat style, and lean, either referring to the adjective describing a fit person or possibly the phrase “lean, mean, fighting machine.” Her Spanish name Brega comes from bregar, the Spanish word meaning “to fight.”

In Japanese, Maylene’s name is Sumomo, which is derived from sumo, a form of contact wrestling that originated in Japan. This leads to confusion with another character named Sumomo in the Japanese versions of the Johto games; one of the Kimono Girls that the player assists during their journey. Because of Maylene’s cameos in HeartGold & SoulSilver, the Kimono Girl in question was renamed Komomo and is named Kuni in English.

5 Maylene’s Signature Pokemon Was Taken Over By Korrina

Across her appearances in the core series games, Maylene’s signature Pokemon is the Fighting/Steel-type Lucario, one of the most popular Pokemon from Sinnoh. Her ace Pokemon is usually sent out last and mostly uses the moves Bone Rush, Drain Punch, and ExtremeSpeed. Maylene’s Lucario is male across its appearances, except in the Pokemon World Tournament where Pokemon genders are randomized.

Maylene is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader to not form a sync pair with her ace in Pokemon Masters, where she instead uses Meditite, which can evolve into Medicham after battling Candice. This is likely due to the fact that Korrina, a Kalos Gym Leader, already forms a sync pair with Lucario.

4 Maylene Is (Technically) The Strongest Sinnoh Leader

In Pokemon Platinum, the player has the ability to rematch the Sinnoh Gym Leaders at the Battleground once they have beat the Pokemon League and obtained the National Pokedex. In these rematches, Maylene uses the highest-level Pokemon out of any of the other Gym Leaders or Trainers, with her Lucario reaching Level 66.

The other Trainers have Pokemon that only reach up to Level 65; however, these Pokemon all hold a Sitrus Berry, while Lucario does not. This technically would make Maylene the strongest Gym Leader in Sinnoh out of sheer strength, no matter what Volkner may think of himself.

3 Maylene’s Dad Has A Gambling Problem

Roark isn’t the only Sinnoh Gym Leader to have a rough relationship with their dad; it appears Maylene does as well. Across the street from the Veilstone Gym is the Veilstone Game Corner, where a man near the slot machines complains about nothing going his way. He goes on to ask if the player is a Trainer and if they’ve battled the Gym Leader, who happens to be his daughter.

The man stays in the same spot for the entire game, never once leaving the Game Corner despite his bad luck. Later at the Battleground, Maylene mentions that her father is helping her train, but only when he wins.

2 Maylene Is A Pokeathlon Athlete

Kanto isn’t the only region Maylene has visited; in Pokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver, Maylene can compete against the player in Johto’s Pokeathlon Dome near the National Park. Maylene will only participate in the Power Course Supreme Cup, using her Meditite, Machoke, and Lucario in the various touchscreen minigames.

The Supreme Cup is only unlocked after the player has met all the requirements to unlock the Solidarity, Trust, Potential, and Friendship Rooms, which means Maylene is one of the top contenders of the Pokeathlon. Oddly, her records are nowhere to be found in the building.

1 Maylene Is Going To Galar… Later

In Pokemon Masters, Maylene is seen battling with a variety of different Trainers including Bruno of the Indigo League Elite Four. In a special conversation to promote the Isle of Armor DLC Expansion of Pokemon Sword & Shield, Maylene and Bruno briefly converse about the possibility to visit a Training Dojo on the island.

While Maylene believes that going to Galar could be a long shot, Bruno encourages her to go. Despite this, Maylene does not appear at the Master Dojo in the Expansion Pass. If she had, she would be the Gym Leader to visit the most regions in the entire core franchise with 5; Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, Unova, and Galar.
