Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

Ever since the sixth generation of Pokémon was announced, we never knew what would change what we loved about Pokémon. It was not just the graphical change from 2D to 3D, it was not just the new region based around France, it was Mega Evolution. While some people made fun of the fact that Pokémon was turning into Digimon, Mega Evolution was something completely exciting and shocking at the same time. Not only did they change physically, but also gain more power stats wise. In fact, some Mega Evolutions helped those who were barely used due to their normal stats such as Mega Venusaur, Mega Altaria, and Mega Lopunny. With amazing abilities, adding new types, and having one hundred additional points added to their base stat total seemed like a win-win situation for those who got Mega Evolutions, right?

Well, some of them who were blessed with Mega Evolutions ended up getting a rather disappointed treatment. While appearance-wise, they might have looked better, or their stats, given a needed boost to what was necessary, sometimes their original forms are just superior. Some Mega Evolutions clashed with how they were originally meant to be, making their new evolutions futile or for catering to the older fans (like a certain beloved one from Generation I). When it comes to competitive battling, they would most likely be considered wasted slots, since there are better ones out there. Here are fifteen awful Mega Evolutions that everyone uses even though they have the worse stats.

15 More Like Mega Healer

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

Out of all of the fifth generation Pokémon, why did only Audino get a Mega Evolution? Despite it getting the powerful Fairy typing, that is the only thing good for this cute, but not-so-great Pokémon, removing its weakness to Fighting-type moves. For its base stats, it only gains twenty in Special Attack and forty on its Defense and Special Defense. Giving it bulk is a good thing, but when you think of a Mega Evolution Pokémon, you think of extra power to help KO your opponent’s team. Also, know that the ability Mega Audino gains is called Healer. It sometimes heals an ally’s status condition. Not to mention, regular Audino can have that, too. For the job it provides, Mega Audino does it really well, but should not be used for your Mega Evolution slot. Honestly, it is better as a healer and experience fodder, not as a Mega Evolution.

14 Still Weak To Fire

Abomasnow was a strange choice to receive a Mega Evolution. At least it made its small number of fans happy. Unfortunately, it does not improve this fourth generation Pokémon at all. Not only does it still have the same ability as its regular form, Snow Warning, but it is still four times weak to the Fire-type, as well as common types such as Fighting, Rock, and Flying. When it comes to the boosted stats, its Attack and Special Attack increase by forty each, while it gains thirty in Defense and twenty in Special Defense. That actually goes over one hundred points until you realize its Speed drastically decreased from sixty to thirty. It is pretty much Abomasnow 2.0 instead of a Mega Evolution. Ice-type Pokémon are unfortunately inferior when it comes to competitive battling, given their weaknesses to common types. Consider another Mega Evolution instead of this one.

13 Filter What Exactly?

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

Many third generation Pokémon received the Mega Evolution treatment. A lot of them benefited from it like Gardevoir, Mawile, and Sceptile. Aggron was blessed with receiving a Mega Evolution as well, but at what cost exactly? It does lose its Rock-type, which does help get rid of the four times weakness to both Fighting and Ground-types, as well as Water-type. Its main focus on its stat boosts mostly goes to its Defense, giving it fifty more points, as well as getting a slight increase in Special Defense and Attack. Its ability, however, is very disappointing. It is called Filter, which reduces the power of super-effective moves. On paper, it sounds great, but Mega Aggron is still vulnerable to critical hits, which will eventually knock it out. With its still low Special Defense, having Aggron as a Mega Evolution will not only waste your slot but will waste your bulky Pokémon.

12 The Bringer Of Sandstorm

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

Out of all of the Mega Evolutions, Steelix would have to be one of the most forgettable. As a design, it has a nice touch of crystals attached to itself. It has a lot in common with Mega Aggron, with its Defense stat getting a huge boost, along with its Attack and Special Defense increasing. They would be considered two peas in a pod because of how similar they are. It also gains the ability Sand Force, which does not help much unless you want to have a team around Sandstorm. In its regular form, Steelix has Sturdy, which helps it live longer if it were to come across a Water, Fighting, or Ground-type attack. Maybe Brock would use Steelix as his Mega Evolution Pokémon regardless of its cons. It is recommended to not use Mega Steelix in competitive battling, due to its weaknesses, ability, and overall effectiveness in battle.

11 Look Mom, I Found A Giant Ruby!

Sableye is easily one of the most unnecessary Pokémon to get a Mega Evolution. Not to mention, it barely changed when it came to its design. It only gained ruby eyes and a giant ruby. Making it Mega Evolve also means getting rid of one of its valuable abilities Prankster, which goes first if it uses priority moves such as Thunder Wave, Taunt, and more. It does get Magic Bounce, which can be beneficial, but it loses its reliability without Prankster. Mega Absol is more suitable than Mega Sableye when it comes to Magic Bounce. While it does get nice boosts to its Attack, Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense, its Speed becomes crippled immensely. Also, do not forget the Fairy-type being its only weakness. Just know that there are better options for your Mega slot than this Pokémon. Sableye is a perfect example of its normal form being superior.

10 Lightning Bolt Head

This Electric-type Pokémon seemed to be one of those who could have had great potential with it getting a Mega Evolution. When it comes to stat distribution once it Mega Evolves, Manetric gains a lot of Special Attack and Speed, as well as slight upgrades to its Defense and Special Defense. Its ability Intimidate can lower its opponent’s Attack by two stages once it comes into battle. What sounds so bad about Mega Manetric? There are better Electric-type Pokémon that can do its job better, as well as other Mega Evolution Pokémon. Tapu Koko from Sun and Moon can provide a better move pool and save you a Mega Slot. While normal Manetric under performs compared to Mega Manetric, its ability Lightning Rod is much better, giving it a boost in Special Attack when hit by an Electric-type attack. Other than that, unfortunately, that is all it has to offer.

9 A Sluggish Volcano

If there is anything to say about Camerupt, it probably got its Mega Evolution to coincide with Sharpedo for Team Magma and Aqua respectively in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Unlike Sharpedo, Camerupt’s Mega Evolution is one that should not be used in a competitive team. While it has amazing stats increased in Special Attack, Attack, Defense, and Special Defense, its Speed gets taken away by twenty points, making it just as fast as a Jigglypuff. Who wants a Mega-Evolved Pokémon with very low speed? Another problem with having Mega Camerupt on your team is its four times weakness to Water-type moves, as well as being weak to its own typing, Ground. When it comes to Mega Evolved Fire-types, go with Mega Blaziken or Mega Charizard Y, who are both faster and can provide better type coverage. Save yourself the trouble of putting this walking volcano on your team.

8 Such Fabulous Hair

Mega Ampharos is a Pokémon that managed to hurt itself more than help. Despite its nice stat distribution on Special Attack, Defense, and Special Defense, it is again one of the victims whose Speed gets decreased for the sake of balancing stats. It gains the powerful Dragon-type, but that just gives this poor Pokémon three more weaknesses consisting of Dragon, Ice, and Fairy. While Mold Breaker is a fantastic ability for Mega Ampharos, that is pretty much the only thing it has going for it. Not only that, but its move pool is lacking, only having one Dragon-type move Dragon Pulse. It is a strong move, but it has no secondary effects added to it. While it does outclass its normal form in every shape and form, it still does not help Ampharos take down its threats in competitive battling. At least it has fabulous hair once it Mega Evolves.

7 Nice Goatee

While some Mega Evolutions either help or hinder the Pokémon, Mega Aerodactyl is a mixture of both. It becomes much faster as well as getting some nice boosts to all of its stats minus Hit Points. Its ability, Tough Claws, also works great because it powers up moves that make contact such as Dragon Claw and Thunder Fang. The problem for Mega Aerodactyl, in this case, is that those moves are not STAB or same-type attack bonus. Moves that benefit from Mega Aerodactyl’s insane Attack stat are Stone Edge and Sky Attack. Is it better than regular Aerodactyl? Well, yes and no. If you give Aerodactyl a Life Orb and let it learn Stone Edge and Earthquake, it can hit harder and perform just as, if not, better than Mega Aerodactyl. While it certainly has the speed to make it go first in battle, it may be a disappointment overall.

6 Ooh, Scary!

With Mega Banette, there are some things off. First, it has a huge stat increase in Attack, giving it fifty points total. Because of that, Mega Banette has the highest Attack stat for all Ghost-type Pokémon. With its nice stat distribution to its other stats, what could possibly go wrong with this Mega-Evolved Pokémon? Its ability, Prankster, which only works if you use non-attacking moves. It feels like you have to make one choice or the other by either making Mega Banette a powerful Prankster user, or use its amazing Attack stat, but left with no ability. One of the moves it could benefit from with Prankster, Destiny Bond, ends up ultimately wasting your Mega slot. Even with the physical Ghost-type moves it can learn, that is pretty much the only beneficial part of having Mega Banette. Instead, go with Mega Gengar, who is a better and stronger threat.

5 Giant Ice Ball

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

While Mega Glalie ended up getting a Mega Evolution, its counterpart Froslass did not. That said, Mega Glalie is definitely a wasted slot for both a Mega spot and on your team in general. Its Attack, Special Attack, and Speed are the only stats that got increased, leaving its Defense and Special Defense to its original base stat of eighty each. The ability Refrigerate, which turns Normal-type moves into Ice-types, sounds great for a Pokémon like Mega Glalie, but the only powerful moves that would support this Pokémon’s ability are Explosion and Hyper Beam. Like with Mega Banette, would you want to waste your Mega slot just to take itself out without knocking out your opponent’s Pokémon on the field? With Hyper Beam, it leaves Mega Glalie to recharge, making it vulnerable for one turn. Another thing to point out is its weakness to Fire, Fighting, Steel, and Rock-type moves.

4 Bird Jesus Does Not Approve

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

For the Flying-type Pokémon out there, Pidgeot got the treatment it deserves in a way with its Mega Evolution. However, unlike the entries on this list, the stat distributions for this Pokémon are rather questionable. Its Special Attack of all stats got a huge increase, while the other stats except Attack received a generous boost. The ability No Guard is a fantastic ability, but it only works for moves like Heat Wave, Hurricane and to an extent, Hyper Beam. With a lack of move pool, this hurts Mega Pidgeot a lot. If it was in reverse with Mega Pidgeot getting a boost in its Attack stat instead, then it would have been a better Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Also, there are better Flying-type Pokémon that can perform better without wasting a Mega Slot, such as Talonflame, Crobat, and Landorus-Therian to name a few. This beloved Generation I bird should keep flying forward.

3 It’s Strong, But What Else?

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

When it comes to Mega Evolutions on this list, Mega Heracross is the least awful. With sixty added points to its Attack, Mega Heracross is a beast on the battlefield, along with its boosts to Defense and Special Defense while taking away ten points to its Speed. However, there is a flaw Mega Heracross has, and it is the ability Skill Link. It is not necessarily a bad ability, but with Heracross’s massive Attack stat, Close Combat and Megahorn are deadly and can instantly KO its opponent. Is there a good reason to give it Pin Missile or Arm Thrust? When it comes to regular Heracross, it can have Moxie, which raises its Attack whenever it defeats its opponent, making it just as threatening as Mega Heracross. With Life Orb or a Choice Band, it can make it just as strong. Overall, Heracross is slightly better choice than Mega Heracross.

2 It Hurts So Good

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

Apparently, there is another Mega Evolution that anyone barely talks about, unless their favorite Pokémon is Houndoom. On the surface, Mega Houndoom seems threatening and powerful. With its huge increase in Special Attack, along with Defense, Special Defense, and Speed getting a nice enhancement, it seems perfect for this hellish hound. That would have been the case if it were not for its new ability Solar Power. While it boosts its Special Attack in the sun, it also loses hit points each turn. Other than that, it will need a Pokémon with either Drought or waste a turn to use Sunny Day. You would have to constantly switch out your Mega to save it from fainting due to Solar Power’s effect since Mega Houndoom lacks recovery moves. It may be better than its normal form, but to have a Mega slot lose hit points every turn is a big no.

1 The Inferior Of The Three

Pokémon 15 AWFUL Mega Evolutions Everyone Uses (Even Though They Have The Worst Stats)

Ever since we saw the new form of Mewtwo, we thought it would be a Mewthree. However, it turned out to be a form of Mega Evolution, making Mewtwo the first Pokémon to showcase it. Due to its popularity, it ended up getting another one. As for which one is worse, it is Mega Mewtwo X. It’s not the worst overall Mega Evolution, but Mega Mewtwo X is mediocre compared to Mega Mewtwo Y and its normal form. Its Attack stat overpowers its already amazing Special Attack while raising its Defense and Special Defense. It does get a Fighting-type added to get rid of its Dark and Bug weaknesses but gains a weakness to both Flying and Fairy-types. Plus, Mewtwo works a lot better as a Special Attacker, so using Mega Mewtwo Y is more beneficial than its other Mega counterpart. At least it is still very powerful.
