One of the coolest things you can run into when catching Pokémon is a Shiny. These uniquely colored variants are rare and difficult to seek out, requiring at the minimum 500 battles with a species to maximize your chance, but it’s definitely worth it. However, if you lack the time and patience to Shiny hunt, there is a new special form introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield you can seek out that’s less fussy to find. Compared to Shiny, Brilliant Pokémon require only 100 battles to max out an appearance rate. That sounds like a lot less stress if you ask me.

Have you ever been wandering in the land of Galar and noticed a wild Pokemon dancing about with a yellow hue on it? These are called Brilliant Pokémon and if captured, come with a couple of special perks. Besides being higher level than others of the same species found in the area, they typically come with a special egg more that can only usually be acquired via breeding. At least two of their stats will have a very high value and the more you battle them, the higher chance of you running into a shiny version of that species.

There’s a Method To The Madness Here

As a rule of thumb, you can remember this tier; battling normal Pokémon will give you a better chance of spotting a Brilliant, and battling Brilliants will increase your statistics of finding a Shiny. Note that you will not spot a Brilliant at all if you have not battled that wild Pokémon at least once before.

You can look at how many times you’ve encountered a specific Pokémon beforehand by checking its page in your Pokédex. Brilliant Pokémon also drop Watts, so even if you aren’t interested in a special Pokémon, definitely battle with them for those extra coins. Watts are used for purchasing the Wishing pieces required to summon Dynamax Pokémon in dens and things such as TRs – so you’ll want to stock up on as much as you possibly can early on.

Fortunately, Pokémon has released actual statistics of Brilliant encounters and how they increase, which has been listed below.

One Battle – Small chance of a Brilliant appearance

Twenty Battles – 1.3x chance of a Brilliant appearance

Fifty Battles – Brilliants now have 1.6x the chance of showing up and Shinies have double the chance

100 Battles – Brilliants now have 2x the chance of showing up and Shinies have 3x the chance

200 Battles – Shinies have four times the chance to show up

300 Battles – Shinies have five times the chance to show up

500 Battles – Shinies have six times the chance to show up

Don’t Break That Chain

Aside from spotting them on land, you can acquire Brilliants via fishing in bodies of water all over the region. Simply look for a yellow glowing spot in the water and toss your line out. Keep in mind that for fishing, you must keep your catch chain going in order to increase the chance of spotting a Pokémon in a special form; you can’t let any bite get away or you’ll have to rebuild your rate for that one from scratch.

You don’t need to hook the same specific one over and over again, you just have to maintain your score. This goes for trying to catch any Brilliant – should you turn your game off, capture a Pokémon with a ball, leave the wild area, flee a battle, etc., your chain will break and you’ll have to start over again. While fishing, should you see an Overworld Pokémon swimming about with the Brilliant hue, simply waterbike up to them (as you would to a land dweller) to trigger an encounter. Like the Brilliant land encounter rates, they released rates for fishing chain ones too.

0-2 Successful Hooks: Small chance of a Brilliant appearance

15-24 Successful Hooks: 6.6x chance of a Brilliant appearance

25+ Hooks: 16.6x chance of a Brilliant appearance

Take A Shot At A Fun Challenge

To keep it simple, think of this as similar to a Nuzlocke challenge. This type of thing is basically following a set of rules that make a playthrough of the game much more difficult depending on what kind of rules you use. Imagine yourself in a Nuzlocke in the wild area where you can’t leave until you battle a certain amount of Pokémon without breaking a streak, and thus you have Brilliant hunting in a nutshell. The process isn’t easy, but the rewards are absolutely worth it.
