The rivalry between Butch & Cassidy and Jessie & James in Pokémon goes as far back as their days in the academy. Both sides have never liked each other for various reasons, and it always introduces an interesting wrinkle when both of them are on screen at the same time. They are always trying to one-up each other, even if it’s a detriment to Team Rocket’s plans.

It makes for some fun interactions, especially when the Team Rocket trio team up with Ash to stop Butch & Cassidy. Despite the differences the two teams have, they share quite a few similarities that neither side would want to admit.

10 The Same: They Are Both Part Of A Trio

Both Jessie & James and Butch & Cassidy have one big thing in common, and that’s the fact they are part of a trio. Jessie & James wouldn’t be the same without Meowth hanging around making snappy comments about everything. The same is true for Butch & Cassidy with their Raticate, minus the sassiness that Meowth has. Both teams have other Pokémon at their disposal, but they are used more as tools instead of full-fledged team members.

9 Different: Butch & Cassidy Had Far More Successful Capers

The team of Butch & Cassidy weren’t on the screen nearly as much as Jessie & James were, but they still had a far higher success rate than the trio did. Even when they were caught, such as when they were running a fake breeding center, their plans still managed to work. With the breeding center, they managed to still capture a few Pokémon for Team Rocket, including a Drowzee who subsequently helped them escape prison.

8 The Same: Both Of Them Became Full-Fledged Members Of Team Rocket Without Completing Their Heist

Back when they were all recruits, the teams were tasked with capturing a red-colored Snorlax. As a sign of things to come, both sides failed to capture the hulking Pokémon.

Despite that, they both managed to graduate, showing just how low the standards for admission into Team Rocket were. Given how competent Giovanni was, it was always confusing why he’d always employ underlings who did nothing but fail their tasks time and again.

7 Different: Jessie & James Were Rarely Ever Apprehended, Getting Blasted Off Instead

Team Rocket getting blasted off was part of the trio’s schtick. It would let them get routinely defeated while allowing them the means to crop up every couple of episodes. It made them look like goofballs and inept trainers, but it was effective since they were comic relief. Butch & Cassidy were treated with a little more respect. Any time they were defeated, Officer Jenny would be there to swoop in and arrest them. It made them seem like a bigger threat.

6 The Same: Ash & Friends Always Defeated Them

If you are a villain in the Pokémon anime, getting defeated by Ash is a rite of passage. It’s going to happen at some point in time, no matter how strong or important they may be. The same holds true for both Team Rocket teams. Jessie & James rarely ever got a leg-up on Ash and company, almost always getting blasted off by the episode’s end. The same defeat waited for Butch & Cassidy when they ran into the series’ protagonist.

5 Different: James & Jessie Weren’t As Respected As Butch & Cassidy

Given the track record the two teams had, it isn’t surprising that Butch & Cassidy were held in higher regard than Jessie & James were. Giovanni and Dr. Namba always hinted at them being higher ranking.

Giovanni himself even rescued Butch & Cassidy from prison in one episode. The same wasn’t true of Jessie & James, who were often degraded by those above them, namely Giovanni’s secretary, Matori. This sense of superiority has been there as far back as the academy days as well.

4 The Same: The Rivalry The Two Had With Each Other Was Mutual

The two teams never got along, going as far back as when they were in the academy together. Butch & Cassidy always looked like top-tier agents, while Jessie & James looked destined to become exactly what they are. Any time the four of them are on screen together, there’s always bickering and double-crossing. Jessie & James even teamed with Ash on a few occasions to bring their rivals down, showing just how far the distaste ran.

3 Different: Characters Can Remember James’ Name Unlike Butch’s

One of the recurring gags with Butch & Cassidy was the fact that no one would ever remember his name, calling him everything from Hutch to Patch. Each time it would infuriate Butch to the point that he once yelled that he was going to change his name. It’s an issue that James never had, the trio being well-engrained in everyone’s minds. It made Butch even madder, once calling James John in order to get under his rival’s skin.

2 The Same: Jessie & Cassidy Are Both Equally Vain

Jessie and Cassidy would never be confused as humble, both of them taking great pride in their beauty. They care about how they look and will go to great lengths to show the world how much they do. It’s a trait that gets shown off often with Jessie, who becomes ultra-competitive any time she enters a beauty contest of any kind. With Cassidy, it’s only ever really shown when she’s in the same room as Jessie, two always butting heads.

1 Different: Jessie Is More Prone To Flying Off The Handle Than Cassidy

Jessie and Cassidy both have a penchant for wearing the pants in their partnerships, easily more domineering than their male counterparts. Where they differ is that Jessie struggles to contain her anger, often flying off the handle when things don’t go her way. It’s a trait that Cassidy often likes to needle by spreading rumors of the trio’s demotion and how little Giovanni thinks of them. She’s a chief instigator of most of Jessie’s outbursts.
