Pokémon 6 Characters Who Are PERFECT to Replace Ash Ketchum

Ash Ketchum has been the main protagonist for the Pokémon anime since its inception over 20 years ago. Recently, Ash achieved his dream of being a Pokémon Master at the culmination of the Alola League’s Manalo Conference but despite this, he’s kept on going as the show enters into another new season, Pokémon Journeys, alongside the new secondary protagonist, Goh.

Still, Ash has also become much more of a supporting character in the show, to the point of including an entirely Ash-less episode, which teases the possibility of Ash finally stepping down from his star role altogether. If this does come to pass, which characters from the Pokémon anime world could inherit the spotlight from him? Let’s go over the best candidates.

Goh

The most obvious candidate to take over as Pokémon’s main character is Goh, who is already partnered alongside Ash in Pokémon Journeys. Goh is an idealistic young boy with dreams of capturing Mew following a fateful encounter with the Mythical Pokémon as a boy. In so many ways, he is as driven and excited to be a Pokémon Master as Ash, and willing to travel the entire world to do so.

As a secondary protagonist, Goh has already proven to be interesting enough in his own right, though some may argue that he hasn’t existed for long enough to win over fans like some of the other characters on this list have — at least, just yet. Given more time, Goh would make a fine Ash substitute.

Misty

For many old fans of the Pokémon anime, Misty ranks as one of the most beloved supporting characters in the franchise’s history. After traveling with Ash through Kanto, the Orange Islands and Johto, Misty eventually returned home, along with Brock. However, while Brock came back to accompany Ash alongside May and Max for the third generation series, Misty only did on one occasion, though she still proved to be a valuable friend to Ash from afar. She also starred in her own stand-alone episode in Pokémon Chronicles.

Nostalgic fans would find an entire series centered on Misty to be a joy to behold, seeing as how she remains a firm favorite even over a decade following her departure. A potential problem is whether not Misty would be compelling to younger fans who didn’t grow up with her, but it would still be fascinating to see Pokémon through the lens of a Kanto Gym Leader.

Samuel Oak

The movie Pokémon 4Ever introduced audiences to a young Professor Samuel Oak. Sammy is transported through time by the powers of the Mythical Pokémon Celebi, ending up in the present-day with Ash. He eventually finds his way back to his own time and we don’t get quite to see quite enough of Oak’s younger life beyond this.

A series focused on Sammy that intercuts to the present could make for an interesting time-hopping tale, detailing the evolution of the Pokémon world through the past and how it relates to the present. It could perhaps complete a journey Sammy started as a boy but could never complete, and return the spotlight to Celebi who, strangely enough, has already been mentioned in Pokémon Journeys.

Team Rocket

Jessie, James and Meowth have long been “antagonists” in name only. Throughout the last two regions that the anime has explored, however, the team has taken on the role of deuter-protagonists, undergoing their own journeys to being legitimately great Pokémon trainers in their own right.

They’re already among the most well-liked characters in the franchise, so why not just upgrade them as the stars of their own series? A full redemption story could serve these characters well moving forward, continuing their arcs following the Manalo Conference, where they proved themselves to be fairly competent trainers.

Alain

A former assistant to Professor Sycamore, Alain was a rival to Ash during Pokémon the Series: XY during the XY&Z arc. Alain’s goal was simple: defeat every Mega Evolved Pokémon with his Mega Charizard X. This objective brought him on the side of Team Flare and against Ash throughout the anime. However, Alain has also proved he’s already main character material.

Alain was the protagonist of the Mega Evolution specials. Much like Misty during Pokémon Chronicles, Alain was a more than competent lead character in the specials, confronting the various Mega Evolutions before formally becoming Ash’s rival. He could definitely hold his own as a solo protagonist again if given the right material.

Jimmy & Marina

Before Alain, two other Pokémon trainers helmed their own special story: Jimmy and Marina. Based on Gold and Crystal from the Pokémon second-generation games, Jimmy and Marina starred in the first three episodes of Pokémon Chronicles, “The Legend of Thunder” arc. In this, they fought Team Rocket, who attempted to ensnare the Legendary, Raikou.

Neither character has appeared since the special, beyond a cameo from a trainer who resembles Jimmy in Zoroark: Master of Illusions. While it might seem strange to bring back two very old characters for major roles, it might provide a valuable chance to see how two trainers who went on journeys separate from Ash and his crew evolved in their own ways throughout the saga.
