5 Pokemon ReReleases That Would Be PERFECT for the Switch

2021 marks the 25th anniversary of Pokémon, the highest-grossing media franchise on the planet. Celebrations are currently underway, which include commemorative TCG sets, Pokémon-themed songs from some of the world’s biggest musical artists, the upcoming games Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and copious amounts of official merchandise. However, Nintendo has, so far, been surprisingly quiet on the topic of re-releases of older games.

For the franchise’s 20th anniversary, the original titles, Red, Blue and Yellow were made available for download on the 3DS Virtual Console. The following year would see Gold, Silver and Crystal receive the same treatment. More re-releases like these would be the perfect way to celebrate the franchise hitting such a big milestone. Here are five that would be perfect for Nintendo Switch.

Mainline Classics

Getting the most obvious out of the way first, it’s a no-brainer for the Generation I and II games to, again, be ported to Switch. These titles are some of the franchise’s most beloved, and fans would surely pay to play them on the latest hardware. Additionally, Generation III’s Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald should also get re-released.

While the later games released for the DS would be exciting, the dual-screen setup would make them challenging to port; Gen III, though, has no such issues. These re-releases should follow the trend of connectivity set by the Virtual Console releases, with Pokémon Home compatibility allowing players to transfer creatures from these games forward to applicable titles such as Sword and Shield.

The Pokémon Mini

The Pokémon Mini was a surprisingly advanced miniature console released in the early 2000s. The Mini boasted its own library of cartridge-based games ranging from simple timing-based mini-games to addictive renditions of pinball and Tetris. However, it proved financially unsuccessful, and support for the device ceased after less than a year. This has left many of these games unplayable even since.

This is a huge shame, and the Mini library deserves a re-release. Additionally, many of the Mini’s games were unreleased outside of Japan, so it would be great for them to finally become playable worldwide. This actually may be happening, as eagle-eyed fans spotted Nintendo’s UK store was updated to allow customers to select the Mini when searching for games.

Pokémon Trading Card Game

The Pokémon TCG has remained one of the most popular card games on the planet since its launch, which was followed by a Game Boy Color game. This revolved around (unsurprisingly) playing the Pokémon TCG, but did so under the mainline format of collecting badges by competing in gyms. Pokémon Trading Card Game for GBC was popular and taught many players the rules of the official card game.

This game was ported to the 3DS Virtual Console back in 2014, but it deserves another release. It should also launch alongside its Japan-exclusive sequel, providing fans with a way to experience that title for the first time. While some may question the relevance of the game now that the TCG has an official online component, the gym setup and RPG elements of the GBC title make it unique and memorable enough to stand on its own as a time capsule to the card game’s origins.

Pokémon Channel

Pokémon Channel is a spiritual successor to the Nintendo 64’s Hey You, Pikachu! that revolves around players interacting and bonding with a Pikachu as they explore an island full of Pokémon, decorate their home and watch the many channels of Pokémon TV. The game is a unique experience that requires the player to interact with the game (and Pikachu) in real-time. Using the GameCube’s internal clock, in-game days last the same as real-world ones, and full days must sometimes pass to progress the story.

The concept and gameplay of Channel cannot be found anywhere else in the series, making this strange beast of a game a must-play all Pokémon fans. Interacting with the electric mouse is the highlight of the experience, and collecting in-game cards and furniture is surprisingly addictive.

Pokémon Colosseum & XD

Pokémon Colosseum was the first 3D home console Pokémon RPG ever released. The game featured a unique concept, world and characters that are still fondly remembered. Colosseum tasks players with stealing Shadow Pokémon from other trainers and purifying them to add to their team. The game received a direct sequel in XD: Gale of Darkness that did a great job of expanding upon almost everything that Colosseum did.

Pokémon Colosseum and XD are considered by many to be the finest spin-offs the series has ever produced — and possibly the best 3D Pokémon titles overall. However, these games are woefully overlooked these days, not even appearing in the 25th anniversary video that celebrated most of the series’ major releases. Releasing these titles with Home compatibility and wireless connectivity would not only satiate the hunger of the duology’s rabid fans, but also introduce new fans to these incredible games.
