Pokémon & 9 Old Anime That Got A Beautiful Remaster

Most anime fans these days probably only know of anime that date back to the 2000’s at best. This isn’t their fault, as the anime backlog is just that massive; it’d be impossible to go through all the recommended titles in a short amount of time. It can be pretty hard to get them involved in older anime, even when they’re bona fide classics. After all, it’s hard to look at older animation when it’s grainy and often stuck in the standard definition!

Fortunately, since DVDs and Blu-ray have come out, anime companies have been remastering anime, giving them the fresh new coat of paint that makes them look gorgeous in high definition resolution, while also retaining what made the original fans love the series in the first place. Here’s ten older anime series that have gotten gorgeous remasters.

10 Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (2002-2003)

While Gundam SEED is certainly a fairly divisive entry in the Mobile Suit Gundam canon, it also boasts a pretty strong and loyal fanbase, which makes the remaster it received in 2012 not all that surprising.

Gundam SEED received a full remaster in Japan that re-aired on the Bandai Channel website, then a few years later got a completely new dub version as well. This drives home just how successful SEED was everywhere, regardless of how it’s been received by older Gundam fans. The less said about the sequel Gundam SEED Destiny, though, the better.

9 Maison Ikkoku (1986-1988)

Rumiko Takahashi has been churning out incredible anime for years, and Maison Ikkoku is no exception. The series originally aired back in the late 80’s, and it got a remaster and a re-broadcast in Japan four years back. For the few of us who don’t live in Japan, there’s an HD remaster boxset available too.

The series is about Yusaku Godai, a young man who moves into a boarding house filled with eccentric people he can’t stand. Just as he’s about to move out, he winds up falling in love with Kyoko, the new house manager. The catch is that while Kyoko reciprocates Godai’s feelings, she’s still struggling to move on from the recent death of her husband.

8 Ranma ½ (1989-1992)

One of Rumiko Takahashi’s masterpieces, Ranma ½ is one of the most memorable anime to ever come out of the 90’s. The story follows young martial artist Ranma Saotome and his father Genma, both of whom are struggling after taking a dip in a magic spring. Whenever they’re splashed with cold water, Ranma becomes a girl and Genma becomes a panda. Romantic gender-bending shenanigans ensue.

The Blu-ray set goes all out, rendering everything in uncropped 1080p and comes with all types of extra goodies like a sixty page booklet filled with trivia and behind-the-scenes stories about the series’ creation.

7 Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-1996)

It’s worth saying that this series hasn’t just been remastered, but it’s been remade in the form of an ongoing series of new films that’s set to be concluded by the (currently delayed) fourth entry, Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon A Time. However, most fans would suggest watching the television series first since most of the Rebuild of Evangelion movies can only be appreciated by those with foreknowledge of the original material.

That works as well, because the Neon Genesis Evangelion remaster is probably one of the best around. The people developing it put tons of work into it, not only making it HD but also adding 5.1 audio and a wholly new dub.

6 The Vision Of Escaflowne (1996)

Funimation managed to get this into a full on remaster about four years ago. The series follows the story of Hitomi Kanzaki, who finds herself transferred to the world of Gaea, where she works with a powerful armor known as Escaflowne and her friend Van to save the planet.

One of the more well-known isekai anime of the 2000’s and one that predates the isekai boom of the 2010’s, Escaflowne got a complete remaster that allowed viewers access to proper 1080p, and either 16×9 aspect ratio or 4:3.

5 Pokémon: Indigo League (1997 – 1999)

Everyone loves the first season of Pokémon and in 2017, the series that turned Pikachu into a household name re-aired in Japan, completely remastered in high definition. It cleaned up the colors in honor of the 20th anniversary of the series.

Pokémon: Indigo League was made available on iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon after its initial run, allowing everyone to revisit the adventures of the original season of the anime series, though it’s only in 720p. For now, this is the best remaster older Pokémon fans could hope for.

4 Digimon Adventure (1999-2000)

Digimon was one of the more fun anime that came on during the Saturday Morning Cartoon era, giving viewers everywhere a group of young kids to follow, as they traveled to an entirely different world and meeting partner Digimon they would work with to protect two worlds.

This series got a Blu-ray remaster a while back, which wound up revitalizing the Adventure property so much that it actually inspired multiple new cinematic sequels over the last few years, bringing back all the fans who loved the original series while also introducing newcomers to the wonderful world of Digimon.

3 Dragon Ball Z (1989-1996)

Dragon Ball Z’s remaster involved quite a bit of effort, costing nearly two million dollars to try and get the series to looking great in 1080p. There’s a ton of work put into them, even though the people involved were on both a time and budget crunch.

Of course, for those who don’t want to revisit Dragon Ball Z with just a slightly smoother look, there’s always Dragon Ball Kai, the remake of Dragon Ball Z that boasts new animation and less filler. Dragon Ball Z Kai is perfect for the Dragon Ball fan that’s short on time and just wants to get to the Frieza fight as soon as possible.

2 Yu Yu Hakusho (1992-1994)

Pokémon & 9 Old Anime That Got A Beautiful Remaster

Introduced in 2011, Funimation did a complete remastering of this legendary anime. Yu Yu Hakusho is now available in 1080p on Blu-ray, and is supposedly completely restored from the original production’s film stock.

This renders the anime in lush colors and really brings out the gorgeous designs of the series. It’s available in four different seasons on Blu-ray, for those who prefer owning something like this on physical media rather than bookmarking it on their streaming service of choice.

1 Cowboy Bebop (1998)

This timeless sci-fi series didn’t need a remaster to fix some errors, but to simply remind everyone of how beautiful it already is. In fact, Cowboy Bebop looked like it was made in a technologically advanced animation studio when it came Stateside way back in the mid-2000’s, and it was already five years old by that point.

These days, Spike and company still don’t look out of place among any other modern animated series, and perhaps that’s why Funimation gave it a gorgeous remaster in 2014. This series is available for anyone to pick up now in Blu-ray. Get on it, space cowboy!
