The Pokémon franchise has turned into such a popular phenomenon that even people who don’t play video games or watch anime have a general awareness of the many creatures that fill the series. Pokémon has endured for decades and the property continues to expand into new areas. There are no shortage of manga series that adapt popular video games, but Pokémon Adventures reinterprets the franchise’s mythos in mature and challenging ways.

Pokémon Adventures is full of diverse and powerful trainers, but Blue is a special individual who is both a protagonist, but also a lovable rival to Red. Blue’s journey through the manga is incredible, but some of the Pokémon that he obtains only go on to experience neglect.

10 Venomoth

Something that’s particularly interesting about Pokémon Adventures is that characters like Blue have a Pokémon career before the audience gets introduced to them. The manga references how Blue has obtained at least 126 Pokémon. Many of these Pokémon remain a secret, but early on Blue reveals that he’s owned a Venomoth.

Blue doesn’t elaborate and it’s unclear if his Venomoth remains in a box somewhere or if he traded it away. What is clear is that readers never see Blue use Venomoth in battle and it couldn’t have been one of his more popular Pokémon if he discarded it.

9 Zapdos

Legendary Pokémon, whether they’re birds or another variety of creature, make up some of the most powerful and elusive Pokémon. Blue temporarily comes in possession of a Zapdos during the Red, Green & Blue chapters of the Pokémon Adventures manga.

Green lends her Zapdos to Blue when he’s in a bind and after it’s able to help him out it gets promptly returned. Blue still makes use of this Pokémon, so it seems fair to include it. What’s even worse here is that after Green reclaims her Zapdos it appears that she barely uses it, so it remains neglected.

8 Golbat

Golbat is a Pokémon that is easy to underestimate but can be extremely dangerous in the right context. Blue’s infrequent use of Golbat has more to do with his brief time with the Pokémon than anything else. Blue first encounters Golbat in the Kanto region when he and Red take on a fellow trainer, Koga.

Blue claims Koga’s Golbat after they defeat him in battle. Golbat gets some decent attention from Blue after he’s initially acquired, but the Pokémon’s presence becomes increasingly less frequent, which culminates in Blue returning Golbat to Koga when they reunite on Cerise Island.

7 Lapras

Lapras is a very useful Water-Type Pokémon as well as a common source of transportation for Pokémon trainers. Blue’s time with Lapras is short, but sweet, and under different circumstances, it’s possible it could have turned into one of his most valuable teammates.

Blue runs into a wild Lapras during the Yellow chapters of Pokémon Adventures and he’s able to catch it with the help of his Golduck. Blue does some heavy damage with the Pokémon, but it’s only two chapters later that Blue loses the Pokémon after he graciously gives it to a less fortunate trained named Evan.

6 Gyarados

Gyarados is one of the most powerful and feared Water-Type Pokémon and it’s a creature that’s more commonly associated with Misty in the Pokémon anime. Admittedly, this is where Blue first meets Gyarados in Pokémon Adventures, but he eventually owns the Pokémon for a brief spell during the Gold, Silver & Crystal chapters.

Blue swaps his Charizard for Red’s Gyarados, which is more to accommodate Red with the air-based travel that he needs to do, but it’s still a worthwhile trade for Blue while it lasts.

5 Poliwrath

Pokémon Adventures does a good job to highlight that trainers can acquire Pokémon by catching them under conventional means or coming into them in a more unexpected manner. There are a handful of instances in the manga where certain trainers get their respective Pokémon mixed up.

This conflict strikes Blue and Red and it leads to Blue in control of the evolved Pokémon, Poliwrath. Blue is impressed by Poliwrath’s strength, but it’s a short-lived relationship since Blue knows that he’s got to return it to Red.

4 Exeggutor

The Gold, Silver & Crystal chapters of Pokémon Adventures feature a Scizor-based incident where a number of Pokémon go berserk and pose a risk to even the stronger trainers. As a way to help extinguish the danger, Blue puts his Pokémon skills into overdrive and catches not only an Exeggutor, but also an Arcanine and an Alakazam.

Blue catches these Pokémon in such a blue that they quickly recede to the background. He still gets use out of them and their levels are all high in their 60s and 70s, but they’re never made a priority.

3 Ninetales

Blue’s Ninetales is a particularly special Pokémon for the trainer since it marks one of his earlier triumphs over his rival, Red. Blue and Red engage with Ninetales at the same time, but it’s Blue that comes out on top and actually catches the evolved Fire-Type Pokémon.

Blue effectively uses Ninetales against Red during their showdown in the Pokémon League and its raised a lot in its levels. However, Ninetales is a Pokémon that Blue has gradually moved out of his party and spends more time in a box as the manga goes on.

2 Pidgeot

Pidgeot is another strong evolved Pokémon that a lot of fans appreciate due to its prevalence in Generation I as well as Ash’s use of the Pokémon in the anime series. Pidgeot is one of Blue’s original Pokémon and he gets it all the way to level 76, which is quite impressive.

Pidgeot is an asset in battle, but Blue begins to use the Flying-Type Pokémon as a courier to get letters to Professor Oak. Despite Pidgeot’s connection to Blue, it eventually winds up stashed in a box after it gets replaced with Blue’s Rhydon.

1 Pumpkaboo

A lot of Blue’s Pokémon are from the earlier generations due to how early the Pokémon trainer gets introduced. The adorable Pumpkaboo is one of Blue’s more recent acquisitions that takes place in the X & Y chapters of the manga. Pumpkaboo is still in Blue’s party so it does get fair use, but it’s lacking in comparison to the rest of Blue’s team.

Blue’s biggest achievements with Pumpkaboo happen outside of battle rather than within, but it’s possible that redemption for Pumpkaboo is on the horizon.
