Since Gen 1, the Pokémon franchise has gotten increasingly bigger, the original 150 growing ever-greater with each new generation. The geometric bird-like Pokémon Porygon from Gen I received an upgrade in Gen II in the form of Porygon2. Unlike other Pokémon that seem to evolve naturally, it’s explained that Porygon is actually a man-made Pokémon using the latest technology and its newer forms are more of a software update than an evolution. With that in mind, Porygon-Z’s disconnected and misshapen body is reflective of a virus that infected the previous Porygon2. While Porygon becomes Porygon2 by being traded while holding an Upgrade, Porygon2 can only become Porygon-Z when traded while holding the corrupted program known as a Dubious Disc.
