The Pikachu-cosplaying Pokemon, Mimikyu, captured the hearts of many with its cute design and interesting Pokedex entries. Mimikyu was not available in the core Pokemon games, making its debut in Generation 7’s Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon back in 2016. Since then, it’s appeared in side games and crossovers such as Pokemon Shuffle and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

This Ghost/Fairy-type Pokemon is rare. Its appearance rate in Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield is relatively low at a measly 5%. In addition to the appearance rate, Mimikyu has a 45 catch rate. Trainers that want to add Mimikyu to their team may not be able to find it until the mid-to-late game.

How to Get Mimikyu in Sun/Moon

Mimikyu can be found on Ula’ula Island and served as the Totem Pokemon for Acerola’s trial. Specifically, it can be found in the Thrifty Megamart (Abandoned Site) building. Per rules of the Island Challenge, Pokemon cannot be captured prior to completing this trial. Therefore, players needed to follow Acerola’s rules and take a picture of the Totem Pokemon using the Rotomdex.

The first encounter with Mimikyu is against Totem Mimikyu, who will receive a one-level boost in its Attack and Special Attack, Defense and Special Defense, and Speed stats. After defeating Mimikyu and its allies, players can return to the Thrifty Megamart and start farming for Mimikyu.

Bring a Pokemon that can afflict status ailments like Paralysis or Sleep and use Quick Balls or Dusk Balls. Using a Quick Ball will add 5x to the catch rate; a Dusk Ball adds 3x if used at night or in dark places.

How to Get Mimikyu in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon

Catching Mimikyu in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon is the same as its predecessor. It can only be found in the Thrifty Megamart on Ula’ula Island.

Be sure to grab the Mimikium Z after defeating Totem Mimikyu. This will upgrade Mimikyu’s “Play Rough” into the Z-Move “Let’s Snuggle Forever.” (only available in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon)

Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon also allows trainers to get the special Totem Mimikyu once they’ve collected 80 Totem Stickers. If the player has enough and has completed Acerola’s trial, then they should head to Heahea Beach and speak to Samson Oak. As a Totem Pokemon, Totem Mimikyu will be larger than regular Mimikyu.

How to Get Mimikyu in Sword/Shield

Luckily, Mimikyu has more than one habitat in Pokemon Sword/Shield. Trainers can try their luck at various spots in the Wild Area, but will have to look during Foggy Weather.

Mimikyu will appear at:

  • Giant’s Mirror
  • Bridge Field
  • Hammerlocke Field (den only)
  • Rolling Fields (den only)

In Giant’s Mirror, Mimikyu can be found as a Random Encounter with a 3% appearance rate. If players aren’t too picky about Mimikyu’s EVs, they can instead go to Bridge Field. There is one Wandering Mimikyu during Foggy Weather that can be found here once a day.

Finally, Mimkyu can also be fought in the dens in Hammerlocke Field and Rolling Fields as a Max Raid Battle. Like the Mimikyu in Sun/Moon, it has an appearance rate of 5%. Bring Steel-type Pokemon or Ghost-type Pokemon. However, because Ghost Pokemon are weak against their own Type, a Steel-type Pokemon may be preferred for a Max Raid Mimikyu. If players don’t have one, then a Pokemon with Steel-type moves (such as Steel Wing) will work instead.

Like the Generation 7 games, using Quick Balls is the best way to catch this Pokemon. Players don’t need to use Dusk Balls unless they’re specifically looking for Mimikyu at night. Instead, use Ultra Balls and bring a Pokemon that can inflict Mimikyu with a status ailment.

Additional Tips

If hunting Mimikyu for a specific Nature, bring a Pokemon that has the Synchronize ability (such as the Gardevoir-line) with the desired Nature. For example: Someone who wants a Jolly Mimikyu (+Spd, – Sp Attk) should have a Jolly-natured Gardevoir with Synchronize and set it to the front of the party.

If trainers want Mimikyu to be a certain Gender, then set a Pokemon of the opposite desired gender with the Cute Charm ability as the leading Pokemon. For example: If the player wants a male Mimikyu, they need to have a Clefairy (always female) with Cute Charm as the lead Pokemon. This increases the chances of having an encounter with a Pokemon of the opposite gender by 66.7%.

Pokemon Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon is available on the Nintendo 3DS. Pokemon Sword/Shield is available on the Nintendo Switch.
