Pokémon BDSP How To Find (& Catch) Larvitar

Finding and catching Larvitar in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl will allow players to add Tyranitar, a powerful Rock and Dark-type Pokémon, to their team. Larvitar and its evolved forms, Pupitar and Tyranitar, were some of the strongest Pokémon that players could use in the original Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl, and their return to the remakes allows them to step into the same role. Larvitar and its lineage have some interesting characteristics in Pokémon, including type changes and temporary Hidden Abilities.

Hidden Abilities are rare abilities of a Pokémon that aren’t typically seen on a given species. In Larvitar’s case, its Hidden Ability in Pokémon BDSP is Sand Veil. Sand Veil increases Larvitar’s evasion by 20% when the Sandstorm weather condition is in effect. Furthermore, having the Sand Veil ability gives the ability-bearer immunity to Sandstorm damage, but since Larvitar is both a Rock and Ground-type Pokémon it can’t be affected by the damage anyways. After Larvitar evolves into Pupitar it temporarily loses its Hidden Ability, but once Pupitar evolves into Tyranitar, Tyranitar will have its Hidden Ability one more.

Thanks to the quality of life updates in the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes, there are multiple ways to find and catch Larvitar. Unfortunately, those who have a copy of Pokémon Shining Pearl will have to seek another player with Brilliant Diamond in order to trade a Larvitar. Larvitar is one of the many exclusive Pokémon in BDSP, although the Shining Pearl exclusive equivalent is Bagon. Before players can find a Larvitar in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, however, they’ll have to beat the game and earn the National Dex.

How To Find & Catch Larvitar In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond

Larvitar can be found in one of two ways in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, and each method is really determined by what players are after. The first is by using the Poké Radar to find Larvitar on Route 207, just north of Oreburgh City. With the Poké Radar, players are able to not only find Larvitar, but they have a higher chance of finding a Shiny Larvitar or one with its Hidden Ability.

The second method to finding Larvitar is through the Grand Underground. After players obtain the National Dex, the Grand Underground biomes become filled with a myriad of previously unavailable Pokémon, like Larvitar. To find Larvitar in Pokémon BDSP’s Grand Underground, players will need to explore either the Spacious or Rocky Caves. Larvitar is a rare find in both of these caves, but the good news is that it will appear on a high level, typically somewhere in the low-to-mid 50s. Since Larvitar begins evolving into Pupitar at level 30, and Pupitar begins evolving into Tyranitar at level 55, finding a Larvitar in the Grand Underground is the fastest way to add Tyranitar to any trainer’s team in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
