This is part nine of our official Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl complete guide and walkthrough, which picks up right after you beat Veilstone gym leader Maylene to earn your third gym badge. Your next objectives are to help Dawn or Lucas get their Pokedex back and make your way to Pastoria City.
Once you’ve got your nifty new badge, you’ll immediately bump into either Lucas or Dawn just outside of the gym. Apparently, the nefarious Team Galactic has nicked their Pokedex and ran off with it. Given that you’re both helping Professor Rowan, it’s only natural that you should lend your associate a Helping Hand – after all, they did technically teach you how to catch a Pokemon, right?
Lucas or Dawn will hurry off towards the grunts, meaning you’ve got to find your own way to the throwdown. Move back towards the middle of the city where the Pokemon Centre is and heal up your party. From here, make your way towards the northwestern corner of the city, where you’ll see Rowan’s assistant and two Galactic grunts arguing near an alley. This is the Galactic Warehouse, as opposed to the Galactic HQ located in the northeast of the city.
In order to progress this storyline, you need to talk to Lucas or Dawn in order to instigate a double battle with the Galactic grunts. Given that you’ve just taken down Maylene, this shouldn’t be too difficult, but it does preface an important part of the game. Not only do you get Lucas or Dawn’s Pokedex back by defeating the grunts – you can also go into the warehouse itself to pick up the HM for Fly. With this technique and Veilstone’s gym badge in your possession, it’s time to leave this town and head south for Pastoria City via Route 214.
This is a pretty straightforward route to follow, although it’s worth noting that it’s fairly packed with battle-hungry trainers. The main route has people posted at various intervals along a lengthy stretch of fences, while the mountain path to the west is easily traversable given that Rock Smash is now facilitated by the Poketch instead of a specific Pokemon in your party.
If you’re looking for the speediest route to Pastoria City, you’ll want to put on your hiking boots. Want more of a challenge? Head to the Great Marsh on ground level. Really, though – and this might come as a surprise if you’ve been following our walkthrough so far – you should battle everyone on both paths in order to gain as much experience as possible. Trust me, the next gym is one of the toughest fights in the entire game – you’re going to need all the help you can get. In case you’re interested, the mountain path also has an opening leading to the Ruin Maniac’s cave, although this is only useful to people who want to catch all of the Unown.
Regardless of which way you decide to go, you’ll eventually get to the bottom of the route and notice a couple of Galactic grunts standing guard outside Lake Valor. Talking to them now won’t lead to anything, so you should continue south until you reach Hotel Grand Lake, a sort of resort area filled with cafes and holiday homes for vacationers.
There are lots of optional things you can do here, some of which are available now – we’ll have a separate guide on where to find the Suite Key up soon – and others that come into play much later in the story, like battling Morimoto. For now, all you really need to do is head south through Hotel Grand Lake until you reach its eponymous hotel, at which point you can leave through the front door and make your way onto the beach at Route 213. Head towards the water and walk west to reach a larger sandy area. From here, make your way north and then west to reach Pastoria City.
