Say what you will about Pokémon GO, but reports indicate that Samsung is a believer. The phone maker is supposedly about to drop a large amount of money to get exclusive games from Pokémon GO developer Niantic. The deal, if it goes through, will result in a new Harry Potter mobile game, as well as make it so that Niantic games will come pre-loaded on Galaxy phones.
The deal will be announced before the end of the year, according to BGR. Details are sketchy, as the news was given by an anonymous source, but it seems that Niantic will be getting $40 million from Samsung. Samsung will also be pre-installing Niantic games on future Galaxy smartphones, similar to how Fortnite comes standard on the Galaxy Note 9.
In exchange, Niantic will allegedly be developing a Harry Potter game exclusively for Galaxy devices. The draw is supposedly that you will be able to use the Galaxy stylus as a wand. This sounds similar to the already-announced Niantic game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, which will use AR to have players cast spells that affect real-world objects seen in their phone screens.
The report even draws a connection, saying that the Samsung-exclusive game might “arrive as a reworked version of Niantic’s incoming Harry Potter: Wizards Unite title, which is set to be released in 2019, or as an all-new game designed for Galaxy handsets.”
As for why this deal is needed, BGR speculates that Niantic is in need of money. Even though Pokémon GO still makes bank two years after its release, the developer apparently wants a strong investment before it goes public next year. Samsung, meanwhile, wants a bigger presence in the mobile game market. With so many iPhone-exclusive deals happening with mobile games, Samsung needs something to set itself apart. A game that capitalizes on the Galaxy stylus would be a step in the right direction.
